bigmac 97kt 13,824
tune and polish springers or not , some thing im asked quite often in pm,s so i thought i would sit and start this . As most of the members that have had this done will no of the advantages of having this done but some of the new lads and lasses may not . 1,,New rifles will come from the manufactures filled with there grease witch is thick and often not good for the rifle at all . As your rifle will more than likely start to twang and if you don't no much about rifles will think some thing is wrong and you will be back off to the rfd full of hell . but more than often its just the grease that needs changing and the twang will disappear All rfd,s will have good grease in stock and at reasonable prices to. 2,,Second hand rifles , most have been tinkered on with, and a strip down even just to see whats been done if any thing is in my opinion a must if just for your own piece of mind and crono,d this is a must as it will tell you if it has been apart IE if its over the top of 12ftp. some rifles do creep over them self ,s but not very often if the rifle is over most of the time its down to a power spring or washers or even tuning kits IE, v mach, welsh willy kits ill get to them latter. 3,,Recoil most new rifles will recoil like a kick from a mule even top of the range rifles like hw97 and so on out of the box the 97 needs tune,d and a polish to get it to shoot good some are ok but most need this done. even some of the second hand rifles will benefit from having this done . 4,, The tune and polish ,you can strip the rifle your self and do it or you can get some one that no,s how to do it ,for you or if you want to send it to an rfd like Sandwell field sports and have a top job done, i dont no what they charge now but you will be amazed when you get it back and shoot it . I get one of my mate to do all of mine and he dose a top job to . 5,,strip the rifle down and get rid of all the grease ( if new) or old if second hand clean the spring down and then use cling film to wrap the spring in to stop it getting contaminated with bits off the wet and dry or fine wire wool .then wrap the wet and dry around the spring starting with 600 and use the spring as a leaver to polish in side the piston chamber then repeat this with 800, then finish with 1200 then give it a few strokes with fine wire wool .do the power washers to every thing that you may think would benefit from a polish do not so much the piston as this dose not touch the inside of the chamber but will not hurt if you give it a little one . Then do the spring give it a polish to and the spring ends make sure you get all the bits cleaned off before reassembly ,apply the new grease not to much and not to little as this will result in dismantling the rifle again to apply more or take some off . 6,,Don't take to much off with the polishing as you don't want the piston to be to slack in the sleeve you may think that you cant take to much off with the polishing but bi-leave me you can(that why i get some one else to do mine as im one of them that gos to far O ill just do a little more lol)the goal is to polish every thing not to scratch it that's why you have to use the finest wire wool you can get . Don't be tempted to use a thicker wool thinking it will be ok and then use fine wool as this will not work and will only result in disaster and spending more money on replacing every thing. 7,,Reassemble every thing and put the rifle to the test . Recoil should be down to next to nothing loading leaver (under leaver or brake barrel) should be smooth and no noise at all, all you should hear is the click when it locks into place and the spring is suppress,d into place. 8,, When fired it should sound smooth with next to no noise at all and if it twangs after a few shots you will need to strip and apply more grease to the spring 9 ,,After any strip down you must crono the rifle again to see what its sitting at but don't be alarmed if its a little over the top just put a few pellets through her this will help her settle back in especially after every thing has been removed and polished and replaced SHE WILL NEED TO SETTLE BACK IN and she may even start to diesel up again dont be alarmed if this happens its just the grease settling in re crono her and see what she is sitting at. 10,,Kits there are alot of tuning kits out there on the net some good some not so good one of the top ones is the v mach kits and another is the welsh willy ones now with these you can ether buy full kits for around £70 to £ ish witch will have every thing you need in them IE, spring, piston seal top hats ,so on and so on but even these can be polished But be warned they will put the power up and will need to settle down and if still over you will need to take some of the power washers out . If still over once this is done the spring will need to be cut get some one that no,s what there doing to do this as a badly cut spring will destroy all you work. 11.. OR NOT .not a chance well worth it top class the rifle will shoot better handle better and will help your shooting capability no end do your part and the tuned and polished rifle will do its part and then some . I find the best part of it all is the less recoil, as its the kick like a mule that a lot of lads and lasses just starting off are put off by and change to pcp and there losing out on a shooting experience next to none you should all ways start with a springer then move to pcp that way you have the best of both worlds . 12,, Vids, there are plenty of vids on the net to help you do this your self and on here to give it a try i no you will love the result hope this helps and if i think of any thing else ill put it back up. most of all enjoy and stay safe  atvbmac  5 Quote Link to post

random 659
Interest in read that,do you prefer shooting a springer yourself mac? After reading some of your posts it seems you have access to a few guns (spring and pcp) and shoot quite regularly so just wondered which you pick up out the cabinet most and which by preference? 1 Quote Link to post

Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
I prefer springers to pcp's and from my experience polished ones shoot a hell of a lot better than factory standard ones!! In most cases... 2 Quote Link to post
random 659
I prefer springers myself although at present I only have a PCP,I'll be looking to get a decent springer sometime soon, looks like I'll be having a tinker as well at some point! 1 Quote Link to post
