lukey 1,621
One thing I can think of is ALOT of young lads get dropped from there teams academy level and pro youth due to size! Too small, never gony make it! FFS give them more of a chance, some of the best players in the world are small, but up here all they seem to look for is big strong powerful boys!! Gnasher, I can't talk up for the whole of Scotland here but where I am all the pitches have kids on them kicking a ball. Our leagues just aren't as good as yours but I don't think you can blame the kids

pesky1972 5,634
If Scottish football still has " morals " regarding money.............and the game is still important ...................what is the reason its not producing decent footballers any more ? Its very rare to talk to a Scot about Scottish football without them talking about English football which to me suggests yous jump straight on the defensive and must have a big hang up and perhaps jealousy of football in England.......but forget all that England/Scotland shit...... if its possible to just natter about Scottish football im just genuinely curious why the game doesnt seem popular amongst youngsters up there anymore where in every other country its as popular as ever.........particularly at a time financially when home grown talent would be of such importance. Like I said..., I don't think football's any less popular up here than anywhere else....certainly in Europe. There's a wee bit of grass right out the front of me and it's been full of lads, up to maybe about 10 or 11 year old, out playing football all summer. No different to what it would have looked like when I grew up in the 70's/80's. I know a few guys that coach kids teams and they take them abroad for tournaments etc. The one thing they all comment on is the standard of facilities in the likes of Holland, Belgium, Germany etc. We definetely lack accessible facilities for kids. There's loads of astro pitches and gym halls in local schools etc. but they're expensive and wind up full of 40 somethings playing five-a-sides. I think that's an area we need to improve on. Once upon a time the quality of players produced by Scotland was measured by how many were playing in the top flight in England. Teams like Man U, Liverpool, Ipswich, Leeds, Notts Forest all had Scots in there teams when they were in their pomp. There's obviously far fewer now, and none that stuck out like Law or Dalglish either, but the decline in English players in the top flight is probably every bit as, or even more shocking. Scottish football & the development of decent quality Scottish players has been in a bit of a depression in recent years but I'm an optimist..., I think that the long overdue adjustment to the current financial climate will eventually have a positive effect on home grown talent. Already teams in the SPFL are fielding much more Scottish players and I think there's a realisation that it has to be the way to go. I think that in ten years time more than half the Scottish national team could be playing regularly in the Premiership with maybe one or two 'top, top drawer players' playing for the likes of Man U, Chelsea etc.

One of the reasons Messi went to Barcelona was because the local clubs in Argentina couldn't afford the $1000 a month to pay for his growth hormones as he was such a small boy and Barca decided that his talent was worth the investment. He is a midget still, but he is the best in the world with a ball midget or not Edited August 22, 2014 by WILF

Not sure id agree with your statement about the decline in English players after all said and done our league is being filled with some of the worlds top players it stands to reason they will take a back seat........but with all due respect the Scottish leagues are not being filled with the worlds top players so surely home grown lads should still be forcing their way through. The danger ive always seen in both/either country is the importing of average foreign players because its these players who are stopping home grown kids coming through not the world stars of the game. I think a small batch of good young players could be coming through ATM but only time will tell!! Dundee utd have a few good young players, young Ryan Gould he went to sporting Lisbon could be one for the future! I think kids under the age of 14 should spend half of there time on football being just letting them do what they like doing, no drill after drill, get the ball, panic, pass the ball ASAP!! Still time to work on all that stuff passing awareness ect, and the good ones that will all be natural to them anyways IMO. Kids go pro youth and from there on the fun starts being removed from it IMO!

MIK 4,763
Its not rocket science football is all about money and Celtic cannot compete but over the years they do seem to find some good talent from around the world but cannot keep them and they are sold on to the English premier ship and theres always a few decent youngsters come on every season ....I think that Celtic have faired well over the years considering there financial sponsorship compared to the teams in the bigger leagues around Europe and we have to remember that we are a team that plays in a sub standard league the problem is Celtic are too big a team for the SPL hopefully one day we get to the ENglish premiership it will be the best thing for Scottish football and would certainly add something to the English premiership .
