Rez 4,961
A whole bloody day in a hide waiting for a couple of Jays I've noticed around my shoot ended up with turning round having sat still for an hour or two, to spot a rabbit, unfortunately for it, dead on my zero of 32 paces. The 98 nudged in my shoulder from a hft kneeling position and I actually thought I'd missed and the rabbit was deaf... It didn't move. On closer inspection, I saw why... Shot placement. The H&N did it's job, clean and clinical with no mess. .177 positives. For all those with tuned 98's... this is why we love um. The Jays. No show. Again. Going again this evening though. We shall see. 1 Quote Link to post

Rez 4,961
Further more to my foray yesterday, I went out this evening for them damn jays but wandered onto a new part of my shoot I hadn't been before. Firstly, while in the wooded area, I managed to drop this 'pie from about 42 yards. The image shows the tree I shot it from. It was taken next to the tree I used to shoot supported. No joy on the jay front mind. Next time. I wandered onto a new patch, in the search of the fury buggers. I dropped this chap along the edge of a stubble field. Thoughts on his unfortunate facial features? Start of mixy? He was left for the badgers anyway, but it looked almost like its was fighting wounds. Walking back though the fields, it was getting dark, so I set up shop at the corner of a cabbage field and took these two around my zero range. All in all a good weekend shooting. The bloody 98 is devastating when we're both on song. However, I do notice the lack of knock down energy compared to my .22's. 1 Quote Link to post

Same happend to me shot one in the back of the head and it did not flinch not a movement so did it again and the same again so got a bit closer and did it again my mate was arguing with me saying you missed it again i say,d i saw the pellets hit it so i say,d feck it and walked over to it and picked it up 4 pellets nearly on top of each other. i thought my scopes were fecked at one point and even though i saw the pellets hit i questioned my self . once again top class shooting bud atvbmac  Quote Link to post
jamesS410 106
Nice write up. I wonder whether your aesthetically challenged specimen could have had an unfortunate encounter with a rodenator? Good shooting. :) Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
Tar chaps. Mac... Means a lot coming from yourself. Setting standards for shot placement for me personally. Anyway, enough brown nosing. Funnily enough, two of the five rabbits shot, I didn't picture all of them, were taken with high neck shots. I'm shocking at judging distances, even on the hft course, and they were clearly further than I thought, about 48 yards, not enough hold over for my 27 yards zero, but again, the 98 and FTT trajectory is so flat, just not flat enough, but still dropped um. As mentioned, the 177 does allow the rabbit to kick substantially more than the sheer force of the 22 which seems to know it out as well as deliver the killing blow. The .17 passes through without it almost knowing until it's gone on 10 yards and the rabbits like 'what the ffffff...' And it's to late. James. Unsure mate. He'd of been for the pot, but I just wasn't sure. Shame as I hate wasting quarry shot. His eyes looked crystal clear though, and he had no fatigue when running around before he wandered into range. Thanks again. Edited August 4, 2014 by Rez Quote Link to post
