From 2007 or 2008 I think......they are naturally nervy birds, very hard to get real steady and can only be sexed accurately by observation, both sexes looking very similar....

Well, they were pretty easy really, but they were as steady as they were every going to be. The hen built four times and laid four each time, and the day the first one hatched she threw them all out of the nest. She was a typical female...just crazy!

Aye.....had a few...nice softbill they are and they either hit it off, or not. They're not like your average bird where you can chuck a boy and a girl together and hey presto, they're playing happy families. No, if the hen bird don't like what she see's then she won't tolerate him anywhere near her. Then again, put another suitor in and she's as gentle as a lamb!

That's the thing that has to be understood with them and it can only be understood by spending a hell of a long time sat in front of the aviary watching. Just watching. And watching some more. Slowly but surely their little secrets start to come out.

Of course, it always helps if your birds are hand steady, and if they will feed out of your hand then that's even better, and if you can hand feed them while sat on the nest, well, you've got some seriously steady birds.....

There is no short cut to getting the birds used to you and like you say JD,time spent just sitting watching them watching and getting used to you is so so important to them as much as you  .They sure know a strangers face outside the flights and they react to it by keeping a bit of distance and i have seen folks a little dissapointed the birds won't come up to the wire with them like they do me but like i say that's due to hours of me sitting and watching and to be honest i've learnt more watching than i ever have reading what they get up to and how they court, bond, build and rear so cage flight or aviary sit and watch and you WILL learn more than you may first realize :victory:
