Saw A Water Vole Today

Recommended Posts

First one I've seen on the local canal for 10 years or so.

Is it just my area or have they dissapeared all over? When I was a kid you'd see or hear one in the rushes every few yards, yet now the canals are clean there are none. I know mink have been blamed but to be honest we don't have many round here so I don't think they are the cause.

there decline here was due to work carried out in the 80`s to stop the toe path banks from eroding by the use of metal stanctioning. this stopped the voles from having the underwater entrance they require

Not seen one since for about 20 year.

Used to see them down the burn and canal when I was a kid.

Used to shoot em with an air rifle. Didn't know any better thought they were rats lol

we hunted the "water rats" with both guns and dogs all through my childhood :icon_redface:

Me too, and every kid I knew, and it never made a difference to the population. It's strange how things change over the years, I see kingfishers occasionally nowadays, but there are hardly any sticklebacks in our canals.

There was a spot on countryfile on sunday showing a place where they are re-introducing them in England. Few hundred if I remember correctly at a mink free place.

They've also got a release program going on at the Gwent Levels down the road from me.
