B.P.R 2,798 Posted July 26, 2013 Report Share Posted July 26, 2013 driven 100`s of MK`s they use to be a class 3 hgv great when towing as the have a dead mans lever under the steering wheel i once drove one half way across Germany stuck in 4 wheel drive were these not replaced by the TM In kenya....the bedfords were fcuked We broke down on the way to archers post with a truck full of weapons....was fast surroubded by literally hundreds of kenyans.....gave a local a box of rations to botch it.....dont know what he done but it involved a cut up bottle and some gaffer tape The handovers went something like " the trucks parked over there....wont go into second so miss that....slam it into third.... wont go into reverse so youll have to 'U' turn... breaks are dodgy so use the engine brake when you can..... canopy is held on with paracord so be careful and there a drum of oil in the sidebin....fill the oil up everytime you stop as its pissing everywhere" Drove fecking miles looking for a spot to turn without reverse..... the trailers were all on A frames so if you were in an urban area you couldn't turn around doubling of the clutch was taught as part of the course the real old ones a circular hole in the roof to shoot from i once spent 9 hours on the side of an autobahn as this one lorry deiced to melt the live terminal off the battery, stopped another towing a silent running generator and nicked the battery, got a couple of miles up the road and the diesel pump packed up They all have the 'top cover' hole in the roof dont they? The new MAN trucks are the dogs.... automatic...or manual....big and comfy to drive.... There a void in the dash...where they came fitted with a nice german radio..... One even has a wood burner in his! Lady i know....has a mercedes van...one of the big...old ones.... Got an old couch....made a frame out of wood to the measurements of the cushions.... Double bed at the back with a memory foam mattress....underneath are cages for ferrets facing out the back doors...could easily be cages for dogs etc... The sink and cooker are out of an old caravan..... Free carpet on the floor... And her old log fire with a hole in the roof..... Cost her very little to convert that.....few bits of 2x2....some ply and some mesh.... Gumtree is full of people giving couches...beds...carpeting away.... Just takes a bit of initiative. Are you talking about the radio....man sv...or top cover? i have driven 4 tonners with and without them mate we use to climb up the rope on the back. onto the roof, across the top and back in by loosening the tarp on the front, all whilst the lorry was driving down the road had a lad put his foot on the tailgate rather than the top step, he slipped backwards off the rope with his foot wedged between the tailgate and the truck, his shin bone snapped and popped out through the skin, we laughed for ages trying to decide whether to put the ring bandage on before or after we got him off the truck Quote Link to post Share on other sites

fireman 11,487 Posted July 26, 2013 Report Share Posted July 26, 2013 (edited) MJ's and MK's are over the weight trucks and needed a hgv unless you had blags like mobile workshop,showmans restricted etc etc or just said f**k it and drove it anyway ,the KM's were the next weight up Paulus and i think the leyland daf 4x4 lorry took over from the MK.The old RL that was before the MK was the one but petrol engined and 10 to the gallon was a tad to much but back in the 80's and 90's you could swap a 300 petrol engine for a Bedford 466 derv at most export yards and the 366 would drop straight in once a new set on front engine mounts had been made,do love old lorries and buses and had a few myself over the years.
