Guest joe ox
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: I've got a couple of dogs that would never even merit a second glance in the show ring yet I consider them to be 'absolutely fabulous' LOL. I mean it: I just love the look of them and not just when they're working either: however they just don't conform to the 'show' dog stereotype of modern lurchers. That said, their conformation is damn near perfect as far as function goes; they just don't have that prancy 'look at me' aura about them, though let's face it, a lot of dogs look superb when they've spotted something far off and they are standing alert and keen. The judges at shows would have a far harder task if every dog stood like that in the ring LOL Wise words skycat. A good working dog IS NOT a bad colour or ugly. Guest joe ox
Has to be worker hasnt it?, as long as the so called ugliness dosnt reach into structural faults...Yes, whats the point of having a well put together show lurcher if it cant catch, but, whats the point of having an ugly dog thats a great worker, that is injured all the time. Aesthetics are in some cases part of function But as its been said above, the best option probably would be a great looking dog thats mint in the field..Anybody got one??? Everyman who is happy with his dogs working abilitys Nobody thinks there children are ugly but this world is not full of beautiful people :11: Edited August 14, 2007 by joe ox Quote Link to post

Sorley x 32
Well when we are choosing our puppy, we have no guarantee that it will be a worker - we are just going on the basis of breeding and our ability to train the puppy. Also we have no idea what it will really end up looking like but even so we will tend to pick (given choice) a puppy that we like the look of. Granted this is probably mostly on colour, not shape. That and obviously puppy personality. Hell I am drifting from the point. Why not pic a pup we like the look of, after all we are gonna be looking at the dog everyday for the dozen years or so. Guest JDF
whenever I see an ugly dog I always assume the best as you tend to think, "well it's got nothing else going for it, it must be good." thats what my wife thought when she met me, i'll have the ugly dog, don't want one better looking than myself Quote Link to post

inan 841
A worker every time, if its attractive thats a bonus but who would want a pretty dog that didn't work? I'm waiting for the first person to honestly say looks Ive been very fortuanate my dogs are not only incredibly beautiful, with immaculate conformation, they are also world class working dogs,I put this down to their bloodlines ,the Smithfields family tree can be traced back to "Stick "on his dams side and Twist,on his sires, the Norfolk bitches great, great ,great, great parents ,"Pitch "and "Toss" ,were bred by Isaac Colley the man who gave his name to the droving dog that became the collie,my Tumbler dog Elrem,is a legend around these parts, his antecedents go back over 500 years, indeed there is a very early daguerreotype of one of his forbears ,"tumbling",a coney in Shepherds Bush, this was before the area was built up. My family have jealously guarded the breeding of our dogs, and have been amazingly successful at preserving their purity,I shall be visiting the major shows this year with my three nim rods, apart from their extraordinary beauty you will find me easily recognizable as my family still wear the traditional drovers smock and leather gaiters,I look forward to your questions ,and admiration.Inan.
