paulus 26
Sorry my eye sight is shit hot but i never got a look at its f*****g eyes................. It can look for poults all it wants....if it finds its way in through a net i'll f*****g bet you it doesnt find its way out....... Apologies for bothering you with a genuine question. I didn't realise you were colour blind. Sorry i thought you were taking the piss mate..................I was about 100 yards from it today... They all look much of a muchness to me, but goshawks eyes are so red you can't miss them. Not strictly true. Gos eyes start yellow and go from that to an orange and then red later in life. A red eyed gos is a very mature bird. or one with a drink problem
RubyTex 1,957
Goshawks . . . . . lucky lucky you! They make the buzzards look pheasant friendly! Yep!!!! Good luck with that one Lab when i was away a pair killed 150+ poults in one night, absolutely smashed 'em...the b*****ds soon flew away though.......... I thought Buzzards were more scavengers than active hunters? Suppose if they're hungry, just never seen one on the hunt before
pip1968 2,490
i was in my street with a neighbour the other day and was alerted by starlings giving a distress call, then in a flash a spa came through the side of the house chasing a goldfinch, you should have seen how quick and rapid it was my neighbour was amazed as it flew around us trying to grab its meal, then it flew out of site i love to see things like that to many people walk around with their heads in the clouds and miss so much

A red eyed gos is a very mature bird. Ahh. Thanks for that. The one I saw was eating a pigeon and there were 5 magpies watching it. Each time it looked up, I could see the red eyes and the maggies taking a step back.

I thought Buzzards were more scavengers than active hunters? Suppose if they're hungry, just never seen one on the hunt before 150 in one night seems pretty steep? Buzzards 100% hunt and kill pheasants, mainly poults, but will also hit adult birds, only they cannot carry them off. I see it pretty much every day when we have poults here. I even watch them bring their young to the pens to teach them how to do it. c**ts. Oh and the owls and ravens also have a good crack, Yay for birds! Not.

RubyTex 1,957
Well over there we had buzzards all over, actually really nice to watch shame they make a meal of the poults, some kind of owl, goshawks, crows/ravens and other small birds of prey. The poults that were dead were only nipped on the back of the neck and had no other injuries ie decapitation like a fox might do, so what else would you lads reckon would knack that many poults like that? Obviously it was a guess by the headkeeper but ya bugger when them two goshawks came over the next night "i f***ing told ya so!!"

alimac 882
That forestry is ideal for a gos to take up residence in.. The ultimate winged killer , only place I saw them up there was near the tip at the back of Newburgh.
