Where Are All The Obedient Working Lurchers?

Recommended Posts

Delighted to say that interest in the combined Ballywalter & Shanes Castle Fairs has really continued to build towards our objective of delivering the largest Irish game fair ever.

It looks as if we will have the best international competition yet for the Master McGrath and All Ireland Terrier, Whippet and Lurcher Championship racing and showing. As I said in an earlier post we will have three arenas operating : The Main Arena ; the Living History Arena at the Castle and the 'Countrysports Arena' - this new arena will be a long thin arena - long enough for any of the 'acts'/events we wish to feature but narrow enough that the public an intereact with the demonstrator - ask questions and perhaps get involved.

Reminder : Racing Saturday 12.00noon start with Master Mc Grath Sunday 30th June Show 12.00noon start

We thought we would like to feature lurcher obedience on Sunday morning 30th June at 11.30 before the show and perhaps later when the showing is over. Nothing too difficult sit/stay; retrieve and jump a fence. If enough dogs come forward we can have a bit of a competition. BUT so far only three people with four dogs have come forward plus the offer of another couple if necessary - surely there must be more people with lurchers trained for basic obedience. Apart from being a fun event I think it has good public PR value!

If interested email me at irishgamefair@btinternet.com

Carragh Gem,

Now if I had had to place money on someone who had an obedient lurcher it would have been you! Still owe you a fair ticket - you should try to make Shanes this year!

"Handsome is as handsome does!" - good looking dog. I may be wrong but I believe any dog can be trained perhaps I have just been lucky in that my 'difficult dogs' have been trainable breeds - they have included corgis - ratting but also sit, stay and retrieve; GSDs ( alsations really ) Man work; Doberman man work; pointer, gordon setter, Labrador, several goldens including re-training some with really bad inbuilt faults put in by other trainers- including show bred dogs to win tests, run in trials and pick up ; and working ones including a bitch that won and was placed in Open Trials, won tests, won in the showring and in her one obedience test was 3rd of 18. Some like the pup I am training now 11/12 weeks is a joy to train as he is really focused - that helps.

I really think it would be easier training a cat to do basic obedience than it is to train some strains of saluki x

The saluki is supposed to be one of the hardest breeds to train.

Not because they are stubborn, just brainless ! lol

Only going on what I've read and heard.

Not brainless... its kind of like they are extremely reluctant to do anything other than what serves their own interest, like a cat or a spoilt child... Im going to pull out all the stops now with my lad, see if i can improve his obedience between now and birr gamefair

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
      Margaret Mc Stay
