Scallywag 78
I think I might just have secured my first ever permission. A smallholding up the hill from me which breeds organic pigs and chickens is overrun with rabbits and is happy for me to go up with my dogs and see what I can do. They understand I'm not very experienced but are interested in hunting and want to support us. I'm totally excited, it's an opportunity for me to work openly with the dogs. Don't laugh now (too much) we're talking about ONE field. But still, it'll be all mine and it's a start Quote Link to post

doxhope 2
Hey, I had been hunting nearly 35 years before I got my first permission, not that I wanted any in my younger days.. Like Ricky highlighted, it may just be the start, word of mouth with farmers is better than any advertisement..I started doing mole control in the early nineties, spent loads of money for adverts, cards, phone calls, got limited response, the number of times a farmer pulled up when I was in the field and gave me work was unbelievable, and the farmer I was doing work for saying the next door neighbour wants some moles done...I ended with with over 20 farms to control moles on, with all allowing me rabbiting, and more than half permission to work my dogs. Ive done lambing, ditch work, fencing, back breaking baling at harvest time the lot, any of these gets you into the farmers trust, Paul Harrigan (older coursing lads on here might remember him) grew champion leeks, this got him loads of land to work his dogs. Keep you nose clean, and do a good job and you will get some more..But, watch who you are taking with you, a lot of people think that just because they have been on with you it is now their land too, they will go behind your back and discredit you, go on when your not their, poach it, tap the farmers around your land the lot, its happened to me Quote Link to post

MR TEA POT 1,287
Well done mate. My first permission many moons ago was a little bowling green,i had a little field to control the rabbits that were getting on the boweling green. On this boweling green was a farmer who loved his game off bowels on a sunday,he saw me one day and asked what i was upto so i told him and he asked me to meet at his farm the next day,so i went and he gave me permission to go on his farm to control the rabbits, which i had for ten years till he moved to spain and solded the farm. Stick with your one field and more will come .GOOD LUCK MATE keep us posted. Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
Good on Ya... I can remember a time when i considered the thought of gaining permission with lurchers an impossibility. I had asked a few but around where i live lurchers are frowned upon, not the farmers fault, but the fault of thieves that masquarade as dog men........... but when i got a bit of age on me, knew more people, and learnt how to speak to land owners it started to all come together.... and now...im lucky to have plenty of land to go at... its all about just biding your time and trying to be as genuine as possible................ i never thought i would see the day when a farmer would ring me up and say "F%ckin hell Jonno, will you come up and do something about these sodding deer!!" Good luck..... Quote Link to post
