A grinder and 1 mm slitting discs will give you a better cut than a 12" stihl

 

I've cut loads of these with a 12" disc cutter, nice and easy of you take your time

thats just savage!! Have you no finesse you animal

To add. It won't make an iota of difference what it had in. You won't create enough heat within to cause it to combust whilst cutting. Unless it was toxic waste. Then you may melt or grow an extra leg.

Chap burnt to death last year when his disc cutter ignited fumes inside the drum.

I have seen instances where drums have gone boom. There is a poor unfortunate soul using an oxy/acetylene torch on the hse website.

We have cut up tons of barrels which have contained stuff from oils to diesel. Anti freeze etc. without incident and with a grinder.

But these are the only drums we have access to. Drums that have contained paint thinners, methanol,ethanol solvents etc I don't have access to and by rights nor should most folk.

I admit my above comment was maybe a little hap hazard. But I'm crediting most people to have a little common sense.

 

If your in doubt then just fill the drum with water. Drain six inch out and cut. Repeat the process until your through. Pay caution though when doing this with an electric cutter.

If your using a stihly then there is no need to drain out the water in stages.

I would start by cutting down the side first.

Seen them mate, but they only LOOK like oil drums. They are about half the size. The real ones are about £250 or more. Anyway, as a matter of principle I have to do this even if it kills me, which reading the posts above, it probably will.

Only because it loads and off balances your cutting wheel which can lead it to shatter. A 4" angle grinder with a thin slitting disk won't cause you any bother.

The likleyhood is most people won't be welding a keg unless your set up with an Ali welding set. Hinges, nuts and bolts are the general method.

Right, cut the oil drum in half and I'm still here. Luckily it only held depleted uranium and not petrol. Hinges fixed, inside wire brushed out and now I've got a little fire going in it to burn off any nasties.

Tomorrow I'm going to fix a bit of angle iron inside for the charcoal and another bit for the grill.

How many air holes if any should I drill and how big?

Set of legs and a lick of paint and Bob's your Uncle.
