jigsaw 11,902
I have a lash of timber to split and was looking at youtube and saw a bloke sharpening an axe,now he was using a stone.I always thought a file was the tool for the job,but after a bit he was able to cut slivers of paper with the axe,he even shaved the hairs off his arm with it.i was gobsmacked to say the least.is it necessary and beneficial to have an axe this sharp, this thing was scary sharp and is it possible to get an axe bought in a shop of common steel to this degree of fearsome sharpness.theres one to get ye thinking ,answers on an envelope to........................... Millet 4,497
Unless you are chopping tree's down with them they don't need to be that sharp..but i do run a stone over the log splitter now and again just to keep the angle right and also with the smaller axe for kindling.. Born Hunter 17,956
For splitting logs, no.
Millet 4,497
Another thing if they are too sharp for splitting you would be forever pulling it out of your base chopping coin..

paulus 26
an old bloke i know who`s in his 70`s and still tree felling always uses the file and wetstone method for his felling axes, athough a good few years back he took a swing at a log he had his foot on (wearing his slippers) the axe went though the log and sliced his big toe in 2. this is the man who had to have a testicle amputated whilst shooting pheasent with a catty one night when we were out
