ferret15 0
it is possible its more important that the cats are used to dogs so that they don't run away i have four lurcher's and two cats the cats were here first and are not scared of the dogs all four of my dogs are rescues two of them ex racers as long as the dogs see the cats as part of the pack you will be fine http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x73/ferret15/dog022.jpg i would like to add that all my dogs are workers and the cat brings in rabbit and magpie on a regular basis i know there is another person on here who has a cat that hunts with there dogs i might be wrong but i think is either molly or Montague Quote Link to post

higgins 75
my sister had cats, and my lurchers got used to them,i think terriers are more of a problem although they too can be brought up with them, whichever you bring home start them as pups, as in my case i brought an adult terrier home which killed our cat of 12 years, never heard the last of it since, Higgins. Guest MOLLY
I suppose it's nice to be remembered for something...even if it isn't my acute hunting skills think the trick is you dont allow your pup/dog ANY interaction with your cat, people think its cute when the pup try's to play with the cat and laugh at the cat see'ing it off. What they dont realise is when the pup is bigger and the cat cannot be bothered, one well placed swipe from the cat and the dog retaliates...there is no going back. Only gentle, controlled sniffing. The pup will soon get bored and leave it alone if it is not allowed to play with it. The dog has to know YOU allow who lives there, not them, so if you say its ok, then it is ok, be it another dog or cat. As Higgins said terriers are more risky than lurchers, a lurcher will start to chase but once they see it's one of their own they stop, a terrier has a much shorter fuse! MOLL. Quote Link to post

Chaz 6
As has already been said as long as they are introduced properly there shouldn`t be a problem Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
I've had my lad since he was 12 weeks and he still chases the cat if it runs in the garden. Thankfully he knows that NO means NO. Recently got two 14 week old kittens as well and so far all are accounted for and in one piece. Moll those pictures are fab!! Quote Link to post
doxhope 2
My deerhounds let cats walk over them, my lurchers would do if I were there, but I wouldnt trust them.. Was outside one day and a rabbit came towards me with a cat chasing it, I spurred the dog on as any respecting lurcher buff would do, with the visions of a rabbit pie and another chalk for the dog, she ran and killed the cat. Most lurchers will tolerate cats if socialised correctly, others might never..Could depend on a dogs breeding weather it will tolerate cats.. Great pics above from Molly.. The sooner lads realise that cats are not legal quarry the better, dogs that kill cats now are classed as social misfits, and will land there owners in deep trouble. Some ot the old boys when I was younger used to tell me to 'forget the deer' but I couldnt.. I tell youngs now to forget cats, but I know it falls on deaf ears Quote Link to post
squirreltail 15
I had the meanest deerhound cross lurcher that you could ever meet , he would challenge and win any living thing he met, but someone gave me a kitten and he was the gentlest animal ever with that darned cat, if you bring in a pup with existing cats a pup will grow up putting up with your missus cats but not with outside cats.good luck with it.
