the_stig 6,614
i was 6 an within weeks every canary we had had died, an his big lurcher lay down an never stood up again, lay there for 2 weeks pissin an shittin itself an pineing ended up took to the vet an they pts, said it was dying slowly of a broken heart, i was young, but do remember, our whole family was fooked up for years, my ole granny has still never recovered burying her 1st born.. but anyways back to the thread, my wife is under strict instructions to have all our dogs/ferrets pts, id want her to put her all into me kids, than fook about way dogs that wouldnt be here if it wasnt for me Why did all the canaries die? i can understand the dog, but surely canaries dont hold attachment like that...... fook knows mate, in fairness my mothers head was up her arse an she knew fook all about em, couldnae find a less petty person if ye tried, she was never bad to anything we had as pets, but it was always a battle to get a pet, she didnae even like plants lol, could have been a disease or wrong feeding or owt, i often wondered what happend to the other stock that wasnt kept at ours, an pigeons an such, but i was a kid then an never asked, an its actually still a sore point to this dayin family an dont get spoke about too often It was the same with my grandad when he died. He'd gradually scaled back on the birds over the last few years of his life, didn't replace his canaries, finches, lovebirds and cockatiels as they died, etc and when he went all that was left was his budgies. He used to spend a few hours a day in the flights with them, it was nothing to see him sweeping the floor with a few budgies on his shoulders and one right on top of his head, they were so used to him! My uncle used to go round there to feed them and have a quick sweep, but he's the type of bloke who has always got a million things to do - his own family and his chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, etc, and he couldn't dedicate himself to them properly. My nan wasn't up for letting them go, guess she felt if she looked out the window and seen the birds flying about it was like he was still there. He dropped stone dead at 77 while pottering about in the garden tidying a few things up, a shock for us but the way I think I'd like to go rather than waste away gradually or after a long, drawn out illness. Over the next 6 months all the budgies had died.. my grandad was the same 150 racing pigeons 50 tumblers 30 chickens 4 goats budgies canarys 3 whippits a jack russell and 2 polecats ... he was a daft old bugger when it came to animals he even had a shed with a bed and a cooker in it on the allotment i always went there first he was hardly ever in his flat .... i got the job of shifting the lot .. in them days the cattle market was still going and i had people queuing up for his racing birds .in his younger days he used to race whippits he used to jump on the last bus to wherever they where racing 5 whippits bag of sarnies and a roll of tarpauling he used to sleep on the field under the tarp ready for the next days racing ...he used to sell shoes on the market my gran thought he worked 5 days but he only ever put 2 days a week in so he could crack on with his hobby ....

Malt 379
my grandad was the same 150 racing pigeons 50 tumblers 30 chickens 4 goats budgies canarys 3 whippits a jack russell and 2 polecats ... he was a daft old bugger when it came to animals he even had a shed with a bed and a cooker in it on the allotment i always went there first he was hardly ever in his flat .... i got the job of shifting the lot .. in them days the cattle market was still going and i had people queuing up for his racing birds .in his younger days he used to race whippits he used to jump on the last bus to wherever they where racing 5 whippits bag of sarnies and a roll of tarpauling he used to sleep on the field under the tarp ready for the next days racing ...he used to sell shoes on the market my gran thought he worked 5 days but he only ever put 2 days a week in so he could crack on with his hobby .... Used to be loads of old boys round like that mate, you don't see them around much any more. Even though the modern way of life has been made so much more easy by technology, people don't seem to be able to find the time to do all that any more, even if they have the interest. Sounds very similar to my uncle, although my uncle has got the longest fecking garden I've ever seen and don't need an allotment! He had a few goats in a rented field when I was real small and a little rented yard where he kept a few assorted birds and a peacock. When he moved to where he is now, he put the goats in the garden. Thinking back over the years he's got or has had at some point, ferrets, kennel full of Russells, boxers, spaniel, goats, ducks, geese, racing pigeons, chickens, bantams, quail, finches, big pond full of koi and goldfish.. I've probably missed a few things! Now he's got grandchildren he's got a stack of fecking guinea pigs and two miniature pet pigs out there as well! One thing I've never seen him own or even tolerate in his garden is a cat, funnily enough!
the_stig 6,614
my grandad used to take his shoes to market on a hand cart he told me that he used to push the cart full of shoes to the allotment so my gran thought he was going to work --he told her he was going to bakersfield market there was no such market ... Pointed down with the last word PUT THEM TO SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP For christ sake give the drama a rest. I should think for most it's just about not leaving their loved ones with years of hassle of having to look after their animals. If you've got workers that have nothing to do with your family then it's a bit of a c**t to expect them to look after them. So the alternative........... rehome....... many will not want this either as they owe their workers more than to be rehomed to potentially be treated like shit. Not everyone has people that WANT and can look after their animals. So what if they want them put down?

scothunter 12,609
well mattyski said he would take mine so if i die when the dog is still youngish then he can go there,if he still wanted him.other than that prob be best if he was pts,as he is a bit of a handfull and has certain quirks that would cause carnage if in the wrong hands lol
