Polishing A Turd.......

About three years ago I was given one of those B2 Chineese break barrel donkeys by an old girlfriend. The barrel was slack, the trigger was next to unuseable, it dieseled like smoke was going out of fasion and everything else was slack, crap and pretty much useless. It's been living in a cupboard, forgotten about until a couple of weeks ago.

 

My eldest lad can cope fine with my HW90 (he's 14) and has had no problems using Pianoman's TX200 and HW80 but my youngest (who's only 11) struggles a bit with the weight and size. He's been using my Ratty but that's not been much use while the weather's been rather cold.

 

As I said, I'd pretty much forgotten about the B2 until I was digging about for something else and I found it sitting there all lost and lonely, so I thought I'd dig it out and see what I could do with it. After several evenings of cleaning up badly finished parts, polishing things that should've been right to begin with and generally trying to make the thing into something that may be used by folks as a tool to stick a pellet up a tin can's arse at short plinking ranges, I've finally done it!!

 

Not much of a review or anything but for a free rifle for my youngest to use, it's not too bad. Useable and consistant trigger which took some doing, enough power for plinking and paractice (I chopped the spring down, 8ft/lbs over my chrono .177) and from a rest with me shooting, sub inch groups at twenty yards with the open sights.

 

Quite pleased for a freebie and a few hours work

 

Edit to add... I had to bend the foresight blade to get the sights right, these things really are a joke the way they're sold

yesterday i polished out an smk 78 and the internals where seriously rough. You could see all the spiral like internal machining marks in the hammer cylendar from when it was made, the hammer was the same too. when slid up and down they grated really badly.

 

Iv polished it out with wet and dry but in a few days when the stuff arives ill be polishing it out perfect with a drill and 12 bore mops with brasso.

 

Its suprising how much difference a bit of time with the wet and dry how smoother it has become inside allready, it shoots great now. Its a shame the chinese factory doesnt take the time to smooth them out as it is not a major job and makes all the difference. It braught the power up from 8.8 to 10.1 so improved power also made it near pellet on pellet while quickly testing in the garden.

 

this was the first time iv done anything like this and strangely it was very satisfying job and also improved the gun no end.

That's a fake one I made for Xmas, I left it in the fireplace and told my youngest that it was a reindeer turd so Santa must be real!

Cheers, lads. No pics, I'm afraid but Timmytree's one just about sums it up!!

 

We've been out all afternoon on one of my permissions and the boys got on really well with it, I just had my eldest with me today but my mate Paul had his lad along with us too and he's also eleven.

 

I've got to admit that the little B2 has really suprised us. Compared to the rattling, banging, bouncing, stiff triggered piece of crap it was it's now fairly acceptable for what it is. It's never ever going to be a good gun but for a young lad (or lass) to get to grips with the basics of shooting it's OK.

 

I must add here that there's no way I'd have spent my own money on one or would recomend anyone else to but if like me you get one given or manage to score one for a very few quid they can be turned into an OK little plinker.

Great read Andy I'm pleased you had a great day with Oscar and Paul and his lad. The lads need a good and ready plinker they can get to grips with without worry if they drop the bloody thing. I must say I fancy a shot with it myself after what you've done to this rifle. Good to see this mate.

 

Trust my 'Andy-Tuned' HW97K will be in an altogether different league mind!

Cheers, Simon. It's as basic as a fence post and nearly as good looking but like you say, it's a tool for a job and not a bad one at that I'll fetch it along the next time we meet up but I don't think you'll be searching the small adds for one

 

I've not been able to use Paul's workshop yet but I've made a start stripping your 97 at home. Give me a call when you can and I'll give you the run down on what I've found so far. It's going to need a couple of bits but nothing major. It's looking pretty good in there.

I've not been able to use Paul's workshop yet but I've made a start stripping your 97 at home. Give me a call when you can and I'll give you the run down on what I've broke so far. It's going to need a shed load of work mate. It has a worn groove inside. deep enough to lay a pipeline in.

The piston looks like an old 1940's tractor that's just been dug up after being run over the edge of a quarry.

There is some serious rust and pitting. It looks like the surface of mars. What have you been lubricating it with? Bog water?

Oh! I couldn't release the end cap easily so I hit it with a hammer and bent the body a bit. It's ok though. It should hammer back and it's only marked the metal work a tad.

I'm not even going to mention the stock. Sorry mate but its all bad news.

Anything can be fixed with a lump hammer, stilsons, gaffer tape, grinding paste and some cable ties

 

Now, where did I put that grinder???
