What Would Your Money Buy?

Recommended Posts

i'm not an shotgun owner myself, but i've shot beretta silver pigeon 20 and 12 bore and really like them. quite a few mates have invested and rate them highly.

there is an arguement for buying a gun that "fits" you specifically though, what gun works for me might not for you.

best thing to do is get to a clay ground that has a shop and try a few out.

That's what I'm after at the moment. But it'll be a steal if I get the one I'm after! Just wondering what others rate if it falls through?

if its the make you want and your set on it, i'd wait untill the right deal comes along, regardless of how this deal pans out. you'll only regret it if you go for somthing else...

I wouldn't bother too much about the brand unless you've cash burning a hole in the pocket.

I got suckered in by having to get a specific type of gun and then even more suckered by posh wood. I regret buying it actually, I can shoot with it but I spent over two grand which was daft really. Its way too heavy for rough shooting, I am paranoid about knocking it on something.

As I've been rough shooting more and more I needed a gun that was light and wouldn't matter if I wacked it on a gate post. I bought myself a 20 year old spanish 12 bore SBS which fits me perfectly, all my worries about it kicking too much or not getting on with the double trigger were unfounded and I actually shoot it just as well if not better than the MK70 I have. I have taken it down the clay ground and put 150 cartridges through it on one day and 100 on other days with no problems. That gun cost me 240 quid and I like it so much that I haven't touched the Miroku since buying the Harrier Delux.

I've no idea what you level of experience is or whether you want it for all round shooting etc but if you want a gun for walking all day with and its going to get bashed and muddy then I'd go cheap and very light. I'd personally only spend more money if you really enjoy clays or driven shoots where people tend to notice a nice gun.

Anyway thats my tuppence worth, I just had convinced myself that a cheap gun was going to be like a cheap car.

Hey Nik, I'm reasonably experienced I'd say! Just after a double that is reasonably presentable. I'm involved in the game shooting scene but standing on a peg aint my thing so shot quite happily with what I have for a few years now doing the jobs that I do, general vermin around the covers, roost shooting, rough shooting etc etc. Just fancy something smart for the odd formal affair, not getting into anything new. My current guns are somewhat battered and have seen some sport! LOL. If I had my way, it'd be pump actions and autos for everything!

I'm fairly aware of what's on offer but was really looking for any pointers on what I may have missed, particularly regards side by sides which I'm not particualrly clued up on. No good asking the lads I shoot with, it's all Silver Hawks, 687 EELL and what have ya. Maybe when I get a pay rise! LOL

I'd say you need to think about what you really want. I put a post up a while back asking 20 bore versus SBS but in my head I really wanted a SBS anyway.

If you're looking for a nice gun for the odd formal day and you can see yourself with a nice looking SBS then I'd say go for it, as long as you're not overly competitive. The reason I say that is that when I got mine I did it expecting not to be able to hit anything but just liked the idea of having it. I don't think there's that much different between a SBS and an O/U but the minute you start thinking the gun is at fault you'll struggle to hit anything :)

Sounds to me like you've already got practical guns and you're after something for a bit of fun. If you go down the SBS route AYA are very good value for money as are Webley & Scott, boxlocks of course. There is something special about the looks of a SBS.

Couldn't agree more! Just been perusing the AYA XXV and a few english SxS. That might be where I end up....... but I'm erring towards an O&U because I want to do more clay shooting than I have been and some clubs can be funny about an auto.

My MK70's not been out of the cabinet since I bought the SBS and I've shot plenty of clays as well as game.

I've shot 100 plus clays with the SBS and there is a little more recoil but really it's not been an issue, considering I've had an operation on my shoulder only 3 years ago I was really worried about the extra recoil I was expecting. If your mount is ok then I don't think you will notice the difference.
