Deer and fox dogs

Who's owned a dog that used to take the above quarry, what size, cross and sex were they ? Curious as just starting to read scooby by Darcy

If these quarry came legal again then I reckon the pup I'm planning for next year would be ideal - deer/grey x collie/grey.

 

3/4 grey 1/4 deer or 1/4 collie should do the job well though.

 

These are just my preferred types. I'm sure there are lots of others that would be up to the job.

I had a 3/4 greyhound ( the other quarter was collie/Saluki) that would take fox day and night. She was an animal on them. She had a run on a few reds too but never took one. No doubt if I was after them more she would of.

 

I know a man with a beddy whippet that took foxes single handed and also used to take deer! I wouldn't of believed it myself but he had pictures and videos to prove it. All pre-ban of course.

If for whatever there are complications with this breeding or not enough pups born etc then I will be getting a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie for all round lurcher work.

the cross i ran in the 80s was saluki grey x collie grey he took both fox and deer no problem and had good wind on hare photo been up before atb

There's deer and then there's deer. I think most dogs with a bit of pace and desire could knock a roe over or a muntjack given enough chance. But maybe I'm giving the average lurcher too much credit? How many can take daytime winter roe though and leave a completely clean carcass? Then again, how many can knock a fallow buck over and run them with commitment? I think what one man calls a deer dog another would laugh at, but that can be said about rabbit dogs etc too.

Very true. The video I saw was the beddwhippet taking a monkjack, with the help of a terrier... I'm sure it would struggle with a big one. But anything can happen...

Feck keeping a lurcher that COULDNT take fox or deer. I know a few keep specialised rabbit dogs, or hare dogs, but the rest should do the lot regular, with no issues.
