Aggressive saluki

Following a staffy attack on our saluki about 18 months ago, our saluki has become very aggressive towards other dogs, especially when he is on the lead. Think this stems from the fact he was on the lead when he was attacked. We have tried training classes to resocialise him and it worked with the dogs there, once he got to know the dogs he was fine. He is still as bad with unknown dogs. Any tips? He was just over 12 months when it happened.

this is a typical example of emotion in equalling emotion out , the attack was emotion going into his system the aggression with other dogs is it working itself back out again,

a dog on a lead can give a false reading of aggression, a dog can feels trapped and vulnerable and feels it has to attack before been attacked itself,

getting it to play with as many different dogs as possible helps, getting the dog to bark on command helps too,

 

a dog barking releases tension without having to act on it, as when it encounters another dog it gets a tension build up which causes the explosion of aggression in the dog, the bark is pure energy and the mutt feels better after and if another dog is present it to is given credit for causing the good feeling in your dog,

 

also dont get yourself into a sweat when encountering another mutt it dont help at all,

Some pure saluki "dogs" can be pretty aggressive, towards other dogs. i don't think its uncommon, i know of a couple of pure salukis now, that a right B@stards with other dogs,

both my pures are agresive toards other dogs , the male being the bad one he doesnt seem to know the difference between play and thrat, .i got to watch him , if he starts he just looses it and want to kill .. ,there is a few with kizzy in them a bit wild , he is fine with people no worry there , the bitch ,well thats just learnd behavour from the male ,not so agresive more noise ,,but they are both good guard dogs , slightest unusual noise outside the house and they let me know ...

this one hates other dogs, and can do some damage.

this ones got kizzy in it like riohog says, best not to let him get to the other dog nuff said, both 100% with people and other animals, they just dont like male dogs, or strangers,

If you have any mates who have dogs ask to go on a walk with them... This would help your saluki's confidence and walking builds up Pack mentality... The more walks with other dogs you go on the more yours will feel comftable around other strangers dogs too.. Just keep them both on a lead... This way your avoiding (or trying to avioid) having any random dog dive all over yours- that wouldnt be too good and the more yours becomes aggressive the more it becomes habbit... and not to mention when a dog pulls on the lead even in the slightest to attack another dog, it enhances the emotion and fustration within.

both of the dogs above are/were kept with and worked with other dogs, the dog in the top pic is kenneled alongside 9 other dogs, and walked with 9 other dogs twice a day, the dog in the bottom pic was kept kenneled with other dogs, and walked with other dogs, pack mentality is ok within the pack, its strange dogs, and strange people that some salukis dont like,

 

both the above dogs were socialised and brought up with other dogs animals and people, by experienced dog men. there still aggressive with strange dogs,

 

not intended to be a dig, but i would be interested to know if parkim and casso have kept any pure salukis, not saying all salukis are like this but i could name three good saluki men who have saluki dogs that are pretty nasty. usually at around 2 and a half to 3 years old, which is a similar age as the dog ol26 is having problems with

My saluki Lurcher hates strangers , hates strange dogs is brilliant with kids , ferrets , chickens ect just strange dogs and people , I've also got a 6 month 3/4 saluki grey pup , his great grandfather is cruise of shildon he's very vocal toward strangers , and dont like strange dogs up In his face , alot of salukis I grew up around we're brill yard dogs if you aggravated one you wouldn't out run it so you'd be fecked lol

male salukis can be very agressive and dominant this is a natural trait in the breed. Salukis are in general very aloof with other breeds and seem to have a sixth sense as to which are working dogs and which arent, Some that are agressive can even appear shy and even timid to avoid a confrontation but if they do decide to kick off they have a vicious streak and can inflict serious injury be it human or animal on the receiving end. Salukis tend to feel trapped when on the slip and to be attacked by another dog only serves to reinforce this feeling of being cornered , it will be a lengthy process to overcome this fear it can be done but will ake a lot of work and patience. Salukis usually trust the pack if they are part of one or the person they have selected to become attached to, they choose the attachment rather than the other way round. if you work your hound give it plenty of work running it single and only introduce it to strange dogs gradually and as said start with ther hounds to build the trust up.

Not had a pure saluki no so cant really comment on the dog in topic, just from a more general point of view it would help... Dogs dont grow up with Evil intent no matter what breed (unless they are ill etc) Im not saying that it will fix it but it would deffinatly help the situation as the dog probably attacks now because it may lack confidence being on lead and walking with dogs what are strangers to it would help build the confidence within the dog.

Not had a pure saluki no so cant really comment on the dog in topic, just from a more general point of view it would help... my lakie like that goes mad at dogs it dosent know when its on its lead.its 1 of them do you let it off and hope it dosent attack other dogs or put up with it?

Thanks for the comments, and great looking dogs cocker. Both the saluki whippet and pure are very wary of strange noises around the house or just outside, not much escapes them! Once they get to know dogs they are much better, both are ok with may mates lurched. They are also a bit better with other running dogs. They particularly dot like collies, terriers, labs or no average pet dogs. The difficulty is finding other random dogs to walk them with. Though we will keep at it.. I do think it's his trust that needs rebuilding. Before the attack he was fine and played with all other dogs. But he has matured and found his feet, he's a big lad, 28 tts and 28.5 kgs so need to watch him as he can do damage and my girlfriend struggles to hold him back! Also the bitch doesn't always know the difference between play and hunt.. You can see the moment when her switch does when she is playing, then will run down anything.. And that's dogs she knows. I do t risk it with her and in know dogs after she pinned a collie to the floor after bowling it over. Other than this aggression issue, they are 100% with people, kids, ferrets etc.. Will keep at it! Not sure of his breeding exactly as rehomed him at 13 weeks, know he was from up Blackpool way, with kc dad and non kc Irish mum.. Other than that - not sure. He's a lump though not a fine boned saluki, people often think there's something else in there!
