City boys, did you struggle??

Recommended Posts

As a "city boy", with a real interest in lurchers/ferrets and generally being outside, I find it hard to source land that isn't already occupied by other hunters. I also think that when I acquire a dog, hopefully this year, I will struggle to get it stock broken as we don't really have access to farms/land that carry livestock.

I have made a good friend through this site, willing to give advice and experience freely but the miles between us are such that it makes it difficult to travel several times in a month.

If you are a "city boy", and weren't born into hunting, Lurcher etc, how did you manage or how did you get into it as a "noobie"?

I am looking forward to aquierng a dog but anxious in the fact it will be tough for me to get the best from it!!

Thanks

i live in a wee rural town and it's just as hard probably because a higher proportion of the population go hunting or shooting, i spent my teenage years in a city and managed to get bits here and there, try sports clubs they hate rabbits, local industrial estate ? the backlots of factories often have a warren or two, if you have insurance why not approach the council they have to pay to get rid of rabbits, a wee ad in pet shops or a garden centre at the posh end of town can often get ferreting jobs in big swankie gardens, as for stock breaking work to get obedience spot on and take advantage of every chance you get even if its the local petting zoo/ farm atb

Problem is land Is hard to get but it also doesn't go along way, very easy to wipe an area out. when I was young I used to buy a days sport off the land owners. Sell the rabbits you get at the end and it pays for it self, once you get a few farms even at a cost the rest will fall into place as your have references

I'm lucky, I live 10 mins outside north London in a university town and have land to hunt pretty much on my doorstep thats coated with gear. Not much permission mind but as there's hardly anyone round my way with lurchers it's pretty much mine for the taking and as long as I'm respectful ie closing gates, not lamping houses and being tidy I shouldn't have any problems. Hopefully lol

I only took up hunting after I moved into rural ireland, no one really bothers about permission as long as they know who you are and theres no idiot causing trouble (like the woman slashing silage bales last year) farmers are only delighted for you to take rabbits and foxes off their land.

kinda stumbled into hunting but im as happy as a pig in shit
