Good Day Out......

Recommended Posts

had a day on one of charlie's permo's, which consisted of grouse moor and reclaimed heathland, that both the rabbit and sheep were responsible for. the gamekeeper was very keen on reducing the rabbit numbers as they are destroying his heather and that is consequently affecting the numbers of grouse.

this was the type of land that we were dealing with, which was very easy to net, but was very hard as there is so many hidden bolt holes. we must of lost as many rabbits as we caught due to these holes.

the first lot of ferrets out were acting like total twats, i think as they were still in season, dancing around not interested. normally excellent ferrets, who knows why they act off sometimes, very frustrating.

top class ferreting dog, caught one that slipped the nets after about a 50 yardish course downhill with rocks, one that i wouldnt hesitate to guess an experienced lurcher would struggle with. but she knows she shouldnt chase the rabbits as her primary use is for beating, so he hesitates to chase giving 100% effort. great dog though.

deepest dig of the day where the keeper caught on in a net, pulled its nck and chucked it on the ground to re-net and it ran off down the hill to a little stop end, we found that rabbit and another down there.

we must of bolted about 40 ish from a 500 yard long stretch of ground, was a carept of rabbits, when we actually went onto the moor it was alive with rabbits but impossible to ferret within the heather.

we finished the day with 40 ish, some thrown in the stinkpit as we had shot about 20 bolters with the shotgun, which was on a very tight choke so fair mashed up some rabbits on close range. 21 were clean and went to butcher, anything salvageable went to the ferret fodder collection. 20 shot and about 30 is ferreted. we must of bolted about 30 ish and not caught them, due to misses with gun and hidden holes. was a good do went aroun with the quad and trailer with the gear in so never walked much and im still knackered! would of probably got about half that if walked i guess...

enjoy and have a good season!

Good read mate, apart from the shite about an experienced lurcher struggling to catch a bolter that a lab did!! 40 rabbits is great going but then you missed 40? An experienced ferreting dog would've accounted for a fair few of them not just one

never said she was experienced. i meant that course was spectacuar and hard, not the whole day ferreting. she was tied up at majority of bolts as she is a beating dog. was maybe taking the piss a bit, but it impressed me :tongue2: but was a very hard course for her in my opinion. not even my dog but think shes great.
