What's the best type of lurcher for catching rabbits.

Recommended Posts

Iv got a Working whippet ready for start of season. I got him cheap off of a pal who hasnt worked him for 18 months he's 3 and looking really fit.he told me he was keen but just need more time out in fields working. He seems ok on lamp so far but grass is too long to give him a good run. Last season I was running a Hancock bread collie grayhound but sadly she was hit by a car chasing a rabbit. RIP roxy. She was really good and I was going to get another from Hancock but this whippet came along and I thought I'd give it a go.

pro hunters use collie xs what gives you that idea what a crock of shit been around rabbit dogs 40 years and that made me giggle lad atb

i answered the question the last time it was asked along the lines of......fun hunters use beddy x's, whippet x's in fact allsorts..........pro hunters and the older guy's that have been there seen it

jeez guy's i have fun with my collie x and i'm not a pro hunter, ive kept and raced whippets for years (they worked a bit too ) ive had beddy x's, i'm definately not putting anyones type or favourite

my best rabbit dogs have been collie crosses. i like a dog between 21 to 25 inch tts. depends a lot on how and where you are going to work them in my opinion. i'm not a fan of the straight whippet. but there are plenty on here that swear by em. good luck in the coming months with your new dog

Cheers pal that was a lot more help than the last person.I really liked my collie grayhound she worked really well with her nose head down and was so tough going into hedgerows and cover. I think this is where the whippet may let me down but hopefully it's court them by the time it makes the cover.

it will catch rabbits just as good as any lurcher, whippets are fast+agile nice little dogs .The only differnce i suppose is prob get more stamina, and better coat for cold+ wet nights with a lurcher. Give it a go with the whippet, you nothing to loose .

ps collie x grey, anything with bit of collie or gsd in the mix make good lurcher for most quarry.!
