It would appear to me that there is nothing wrong with Irish shows. It's more to do with the people attending and after event mudslinging. Much the same happens over here in "Blighty" but with a lot less vigour.

One thing I have noticed over here though, is that racing is either advertised as an "open" meaning Greys are welcome to run or there is racing for Greys in the racing schedule.

Yes, you will always get the ones that must win at all costs and put up a grey in amongst the Lurchers but who are they really cheating?

money changes folk...cheating dont matter when there is a cash as a result

there was no complaining about the racing at the mourne and that was because i stated on the line if there was any problems then spit it out there and then and funny enough face to face there were no complaints, the fact is all the mouthing happens from behind keyboards under false names and it doesnt matter about any prizes from there.I can tell you all under my own name weither you like it or not that the most of the ones who run the shows are sick of this goin on and if it keeps up it could be a long boring summer in 2013. OK Kieran, hands up I've never been to one of your shows but still have an opinion,Did you have prize money on offer?

i think youre missing the point leeview, yes there was some money though not much but the fact remains that all the mouthing on here is from the same gang behind keyboards and false names. I really dont care who they are or weither they like me or not but if they are going to accuse someone of something then they should have they swingers to do it on the line and not on a screen under a made up name

wnm were you not at the mourne? albert did sponser things at the mourne and thanks to him for doing so because without the people like albert the charities would get less money because id have to spend more. as far as racing ,as i said above there were no questions on the line of any race on the day when dogs were raced.maybe instead of think things happen you should attend a few and support them!!

WNM,

As I said before we have similar prizes for the gundogs and much larger for the clay pigeon shooting - together with the club running the shoot we have managed to put up/acquire sponsorship of c €15,000 for the shooting. Two points I want to make about this :

1.Apart from the money we invest back into the competitions ourselves we can get sponsorship for clays because THERE IS NO HASSLE Or SLANGING INVOLVED AFTERWARDS. ANY DISPUTES ARE HANDLED THERE AND THEN ON THE DAY AND NOT RAKED OVER FOR WEEKS AFTERWARDS! Would you as a sponsor want to have your products associated with such negative publicity as that generated for terriers & lurchers on this forum?

2. Now 'hands up'- until we got some probably deserved criticism on this forum for NOT treating the terriers, whippets and lurchers like the other competitions in terms of prize fund we had not put back as much into their prize fund or given them at least one large prize at each show to aim at. I took up the challenge and tried to acquire sponsorship to help us pump prime the prize fund BUT the majority of the prize fund came out of our own pockets.

People ask me ( including my family who want me to retire) why I continue to run game fairs - I do it , as my colleagues do it because we are passionate about our sports and the defence of them and we feel that our events provide the best ways to promote and defend our sports. Through my own involvement with the terrier, whippet and lurcher fraternity I have met several very genuine people whose enthusiasm and passion for their sports matches my own for my sports, and who are determined to promote a positive image for terriers , lurchers and whippets. It has been a pleasure and a priviliege to help them prepare for probable battles to come by involving them fully in our shows and PR. In addition when I saw the work that a number of people were doing to (a) try to run well organised events which were a credit to the terrier & lurcher community and (B) raise money for charities which are close to Irene and my own sympathies we also gave some modest financial and other support to a number of other shows. We also do this for angling, shooting and gundog events.

Unlike other organisers we do not need our fairs for our livelihood and can concentrate on making them successful first and profitable secondly - that is why we are prepared to put back a significant part of our forecast revenue into our prize funds including terrier, lurcher and whippets.

However if the majority of genuine terrier , lurcher and whippet enthusiasts feel that it would be better for us to treat them differently to other competitors and reduce our prizes to nominal trophies and rosettes then we are happy to look at this again. Views please.

We have an objection system in place if anyone wants to use it at our events . So I suggest if you have an honest objection to make it as Tango says have the balls to do it at the event under your own name not bitch about it afterwards.

The Mc Grath  Racing Club Dog Show and Race Day, Sunday 31st August 25
**(Representing Mr Aj Titterington of The 5 Nations  and The Great Game Fairs of Ireland)**
It has been said Carlow is one of the oldest counties in Ireland. Within this beautiful County traditionally rural and near the M9 motorway lies the village of Ballinabrannagh. This was the venue for The Mc Grath Racing Club Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 31stTH August 25.
As it was 5 Nations day,Ballinabrannagh was buzzing with excitement. It was here in the late summer weather sporting enthusiasts from north and south of the border came to view the challenges of the sporting elite, and to partake in the Country sports events listed on the day.
As we approached the venue, it was very evident the popularity of this now annual show and the footfall far bigger than last year, all parking places were  filling up fast. On entering the field, I met so many patrons who I would have met at the Great Game Fairs of Ireland  in Shanes Castle. At this point  the memories came flooding back and what happy memories they were, probably never to return. The weather was very windy all day with some heavy showers in between.
The show rings were well spaced out and the racetrack was in immaculate condition despite the heavy rain during the week.
The entire McGrath family was out in strength on Sunday. I would guess all 15 children of the household and all helping out in every way they could.
It was nice to see all our little boys and girls in the childrens handling class showing off their faithful Canine breeds. We must not forget that these little people are our Country Sportsmen and women and show organisers of to morrow.
Ged Donagh paid a lovely tribute to  5 young sports girls and boys that have attended and showed their dogs at our shows in the summer months in 2025 and previous. These 5 young people  are now our  Young Sports Personalities of the year. They are Clodagh Gentle/Ian McGrath /Ivy Roche/Charlie Mc Caughey and TJ Duggan. Each young person in the group received a nice trophy sponsored by Ged himself for all their hard work in the ring. Ged does this now annually. What a lovely thought and accolade to these Young Sports People.
Next on the schedule was the Ross Rice racing cup in memory of Ross who passed away after an accident a few years ago. It was lovely to see all Rosses mates there to support and honour and keep the memory of their treasured friend alive. There were cheers all around the field when Jaimie O Connors winning dog romped home to victory for the 2nd time around. He was last years winner also. Many thanks to Ged Donagh for keeping this young mans memory alive through this race and sponsoring this event.
Time passes so quickly, very soon it was Race and Show time.

And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Mc Grath Family for another brilliant show and race day on Sunday. The saying is that behind every good man is a good woman and Biddy Mc Grath you definately fit that picture. Biddy, we would have been lost without you. Along with Michael and Jack, you put a lot of hard work in behind the scenes to make this day most enjoyable for everyone.
Your whole family was so welcoming, and made us all feel at ease in your native Co Carlow. Thank you so much for the lovely presentation to us on Sunday, it was so unexpected and very much appreciated.
As the end of the day was approaching, it was time to say good bye to Balinabrannagh for another year and be on the road again to Co Armagh and the place we call home.
Many thanks Mc Grath Racing Club for the memories, and God willing, we will all be back again in 2026 for another great window in Country Sports.
To we meet again God Bless.
