Aye fella I take it you walk them every day, I would hardly call it graft..   If thats the case mine work everyday of the year sometimes twice a day..   If you run your dog on 40 odd rab

a heavy lurcher needs walked and ran plenty of lead work and loose running. chaseing a ball is ideal as is running a lure. i find three or four miles a day plus off lead stuff for ten /fifteen minutes

3 mile roadwork and then a good hours free running/hunting about daily should see a heavy dog soon start to get in shape...then in season a few nights lamping mixed in should have a fit and healthy do

dogs need to be exercised in the summer aswell as winter  dont see many wolfs on the beach in magaluf in the summer :whistling: but then again :D

More than 2 or even 3 ways to keep a dog interested and in shape,i find it quaintly amusing that the ones who care to rest the dogs and let things recover their numbers don,t feel the need to justify and look for reasonable excuses for their actions,i understand the genuine pest control options and even entering a youngster, the rest ive little time or understanding for.

Each to there own the season's are short enough as it is i am here for a good time not a long time

i thought this thread was about heavy lurchers' as in heavy made dogs. not fat dogs. you should call a spade a spade. ive never owned a fat working dog so havnt a clue what to do with a fat dog..but working it in the summer wouldnt be good for a fat dog :D people who hunt hares and young foxes in the summer months should be horse whipped. or publicly flogged  arsewipes

C'mon lads !! Lets have some more soul bearing !!LOL !! Who else works their dogs all year round ???? :whistling:

Cheers.

I don,t feel the need to overwork the land, why make inroads into unworthy quarry that will be a better days sport later on,especially when it grows to a size that may better challenge the dogs.Ive plenty to do at this time of year, the dogs can still be kept physically fit with a few leisurely walks and swims.I find the dogs are physically and mentally so much fresher come late autumn, due to a break, less chance of picking up knocks and bangs and a chance to recover from an arduous season.

Really i find dog's that are kept running and working all year round suffer less injurys muscles etc when they get it hard come the cutting of the corn

Even the best of athletes need a break, its not just the dogs,i try to let things breed without hindrance. What works for one may not suit another, ill never understand the need for it,never have and if i ever do ill know its time to quit.

I do not think it possible to keep any animal fit all yr round , and the need to drop the animal out of condition is for the reason to rest and let the body recover etc , leisurely walks alls thats needed in the summer mths , then the animal can be put throug a fitness keep, for the one set of the working season fitness then becomes better with ongoing work throughout the season , just my take on it . atb bunnys.

Best way to keep a dog fit, simples, give it what you bought it for, WORK, mine are worked daily, fit as feck. just like me

Worked daily??

To what level ??

Handful of rabbits or bagsful??

I Dont even work my dogs everyday in the season, My dog is a cardboard cutout after a hard session it gets good grub and rest.. You surely cant push dogs full steam day in day out ??

When the seasons full swing 4/5 nights is more enought for man and beast..

My dogs are always fit and well but not "match fit" in the off season..
