Dan McDonough 560
Thanks, that's what I was looking for. That makes a lot of sense. Things are tight over here too. Maybe not as much so but it certainly can be felt. This guy we got in charge over here is a real pile of lies and likely the biggest fraud we've ever seen. When I go across country to hunt usually pick up several dog hauls to cut the gas bill, sell a dog along the way and have friends on the other end to put me up. Somehow I end up getting it done but it's precarious at best. It would be nice to be able to just take off and get to sleep in hotels wherever I end up. Nice thing is...bobcats (western high desert cats) are averaging around $500 so if you can get into a good patch of catchs, your going to go home with your pockets tight. Even the cats out in the plains states are going for around $200 and are much easier to hunt due to the terain. I feel for you guys when it comes to having to live in that economy but I'd take being a poor hunter than a rich anything...anytime! I'd rather live in a shipping crate with a couple of good dogs than in a mansion with a couple of crappy ones. I do have kids so I do have to maintain a certain level of living but we all live off the land as much as we can in this family. I figured the boarder crossings had to get in the way quite a bit. It's one thing getting into Africa, it's another to get around in Africa I would imagine. I didn't figure about all of the conditions on both guns and dogs but I should have. It's the same way with going up into Canda. Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,910
Is there even anything worth hunting in the northern African countries? All right for holidays in the sun but hunting? All the African hunting outfitters seem to be mid-southern Africa.... Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,165
Drive to Africa to take the dogs for a run!! I've read it all now! They say about 75% of yanks don't have a passport. That will be why most don't have a clue about the outside world, lol. It would be a bloody expensive rabbit that's for sure. Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
Tomo- I think gasoline (petrol) is at $3.85 and deisel is maybe .30 cents more. Not sure what that is in pounds (don't have that key on US keyboards). I think 7 pounds works out to be 8 or 9 $$ (not sure). That would keep me walking for all but emergencies. That's just insane. I would imagine that a good part of that was taxes of some sort(s). If petrol went that high tomorrow, the US would shut down and fall into a deep depresion overnight. That socialist crap is taking off over here. If we don't vote out the curent jerk, it won't be long and we'll want to move there. Of course, there are the people in the cities that think differently and never set foot outside their sanitized and polished world. I'm sure it's the same story over there. When driving is that expensive I don't know how any regular man could spend much time thinking of going anywhere much less moving across the ocean. I would not mind helping someone out if they wanted to try. It's not perfect over here but it seems to be quite a bit easier to do what you want. I have a room above my garage and could fix it up a little and help someone get their feet on the ground. Of course you would have to start out in Norhtern Wisconsin and there are better places to live for hunting than here but not many. The bear hunting is the best, there are a pile of coyotes, some cats, lots of fox, the duck hunting is good, snow-shoe hare, piles of rabbits in the right places, the fishing is good almost anywhere, I live near thousands and thousnads of acres of public land and I'm only 20 min. (driving) from 100's of thousands more of State forest land. If someone wsa thinking they would like to give it a go but doesn't think they are going to be able, maybe they would like to send their son or daughter and give them the chance. My wife and I would enjoy that and it may be a good opportunity for a young adult. If they work hard, they could haul the rest of the family with them in a couple of years. It wouldn't take very long to get established and put some money away. I know enough people that it wouldn't be to hard to get work (depending on someone's skills of course). Even then, without much skill anyone can find a job for $10-$15/hour and live on the cheap, have a car in the first year and a house in five...less if you've got some other skills. Construction skills like carpentry, plumbing, etc. I would like to learn first hand from someone who had first-hand experience with lurchers, and knew their way around some of the various breeds of dogs that go into this game. Don't think I'm nuts, I know this would take some work but where else would I get to learn this sort of thing aside from comeing over there. I've got a baby coming at the end of summer so I don't think I'd be able to come over there for a while anyhow. Maybe I'll put together an official plan and post it up. This has really got me thinking... Quote Link to post
Tyla 3,179
Hey Dan, what about immigration legalities, work permits and such? If its as easy as you make it sound I'll do it! Im a carpenter, my wifes an ecologist and we have plenty of dogs to bring, could easily live for a while on the rents from property over here too. I think there'll be more to it than it first appears, i've travelled a fair bit and pretty much the only place that'll take anyone anytime is here! lol Quote Link to post
Bryan 1,363
I don't know much about any of the countries in Europe. What I have noticed is that there sure seems to be a lot more rules over there. It seems to me like it's the land where nothing is allowed. I have only a small understanding of your gun laws and even less of your game laws. I just know there are a lot of them! What keeps you folks over there? here are some of the regulations for hutning within just one state of America, Land of the Free? Don't believe the hype. http://www.fgc.ca.gov/regulations/current/mammalregs.aspx Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
I'm going to look into it. I don't see another way to get the opportunity right now. I've got to go and pick up a trapped coon from a buddy for the young dogs and stop off and get some mulch for the garden. I'll be back later on today. Just wait untill the wife hears what I have brewing. I think she'll like it. Maybe not in the first minute but she'll think about it and I bet she'll like the idea. You two don't have any kids yet? That sure would make it easier on you if you didn't, but still doable. Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
Bryan- Please don't judge the US by looking at the state of California. Most people wish that state would hurry up and drop off into the ocean already! CA is as close to a socilist republic as you can get here in the US. Check out N. Dakota...almost no gun laws. My friends and I used to go there to hunt coyotes on the plains because you can park your truck in the middle of the road and start shooting out your window. I think you'd get the death penalty in CA for that. CA is the worst state in the country but was even worse is that they have some of the best hunting in the country also. Total CRAP! I don't even want to visit that state and neither should you. Be back later. Quote Link to post

Don't believe the hype. http://www.fgc.ca.go...mammalregs.aspx Yeah, I lived in San Jose for a couple years. California is a little different. But, we definetly have a full range of hunting an fishing laws in my home state. Seasons, bag limits, appropriate weapons etc. If your caught poaching in Michigan, granted with one conservation officer per county. The odds of getting caught are slim. But, if you are, they'll confiscate everything but your fillings. ie truck, guns, gear, and dogs. Some judges give the dogs back. ATB Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Just one thing for the knockers, i know Americans that travel further in their own country to hunt, than we would if we went from the U.K to Africa. I know a lot of yanks don't have passports, but they have a huge area and lots of differing cultures and landscapes they can visit within one country, without a passport. A lot of Brits never really travel abroad, and we live on a postage stamp in comparison! North Africa has jackels amongst other interesting quarry. 1 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
If you can convince me it's easy enough, me and the missus would seriously consder America. Quote Link to post
