gnasher16 31,346
I'm a lurcher owner and although my dogs carry this blood, I simply have no use for a dog of such pedigree. They are for others, far more qualified than me! Believe me mate.....the fact you work your dogs and have a good understanding of dogs in general..................makes you more qualified than 90 % of American Pit Bull Terrier owners in todays times !.....sad as it is to admit. If B11 applied himself to "those" dogs, and "that" thing he'd be hard to beat, I won't go into detail but some of the so called bulldog men I've met just about manage to look after themselves, it is credit to the durability of the breed and not to them if they've ever had a dog that's done well.

johnny boy68 11,726
I think they're great dogs, wonderful athletic specimens but I couldn't justify owning one these days. Bit like keeping a national hunt horse in your garden, looks good but serves no purpose.

Bit like keeping a national hunt horse in your garden, looks good but serves no purpose. i know what you mean john, i have kept them and they are great dogs. They are as been said a real one of type of dog, pound for pound they are the strongest dog in the world no dout about it.They offer hell of a lot to other breeds , with strenght , tenacity, agilty, brain yes brain very clever dogs, and not just for lurchers any breed .But for me i prefer a lurcher bullx or what ever x to straight bull . As hunting is my main thing , so even if you could have them now, i wouldnt.!
Waz 4,292
In different times, id loved to own a great dog like this and to make use of its great traits.
jetro 5,349
if the ban was to be lifted, which i think it should be, would anyone off you not consider of getting one ant training it for weight pulling and athletics trails. atb,j.

I could find work for one in the countryside/hunting. But to use a dog for weight pulling or jumping about......dont float my boat, ill leave that to the pretty boys. Cleanspade 3,324
Wouldnt buy one.....would own one in a heartbeat......why,because they are the greatest athlete in canine history........................simple. Wouldnt want to own one in this country though.....even if i could that to me is a very open statement. would you put them above. say. the greyhound or saluki. some of the finest canine specemins ive seen have been crossbred. its been said that they are the strongest dog on the planet pound for pound. is this a fact???. i think they are fine dogs but folk tend to over rate them. ive seen one or two that was badly put together and not up to much to be honest. does this breeds rep come from the quality of the breed in general or from one or two outstanding individuals. its hard to seperate the hype from the truth. i would have loved to own a decent wheaten but wouldnt have the work for it so. ive got more sense. these dogs where bred to fight and i would hazard a guess that the very best are bred from generations of top quality workers. would these dogs settle down to weight pulling and the likes. ?? Thank you mate (and a very belated Happy Birthday ) but it'd be the last thing i'd be doing with myself. My post was just to illustrate the FACT that this breed ain't for anyone, no matter how much one may take your fancy. I can see it now, a lifted ban, a rush from folk who keep hunting dogs to purchase, maybe some 'field work' to prove it's illustrious breeding and then later bred, bred by the many who keep churning out lurcher pups without regard for purpose, sure, a friend may take one but the rest.. I'd betcha sold, on the open market...! And it's that that got the breed in so much shite in the first place..!!
gnasher16 31,346
that to me is a very open statement. would you put them above. say. the greyhound or saluki. some of the finest canine specemins ive seen have been crossbred. its been said that they are the strongest dog on the planet pound for pound. is this a fact???. i think they are fine dogs but folk tend to over rate them. ive seen one or two that was badly put together and not up to much to be honest. does this breeds rep come from the quality of the breed in general or from one or two outstanding individuals. its hard to seperate the hype from the truth. While i respect the impressive qualities of a Greyhound or Saluki...yes i would definately put the performance bred American Pit Bull Terrier way above them as achievements within the canine world..... Strongest dog on the planet im not sure about or much care to be honest......and no their reputation was not built upon 1 or 2 good dogs........for me,a good representative of this breed will be first and foremost a deeply game dog in his heart.....followed by the lesser but important qualities of great intelligence and outstanding athletic ability.......i believe the type of gameness a fighting dog must show is actually a complete reversal of nature........most " normal dogs " go through the fight or flight process after which its usually a few minutes of crash bang wallop then " im a survivor im outta here "......................to go up to and beyond the point of which you cannot come back from is not natural in the animal world and through selective breeding over many generations an animal which will happily do this was achieved................that for me puts the breed in front of any other........thats not to say as with any breed theres not poor representatives of the breed...only my opinion of course.
