reddawn 2,173
i own dogs, aswell as small children, i had working dogs when my wife gived birth to our 1st kid, an we kept the dog an even got a some more while she was pregnant with the second child, there have been a few jokes made on this thread like, id rather get shot of the kids..... thats okay as a laff, but i know my kids come 1st, not just over the dogs, over everything else life has to offer me, they are MY children, i brought them into this world an ill stand by them 100%... its easy to say that sitting here today, as all my dogs live in kennels, but i did have them in the house as pups an did socialise them as best i could with children, not only my own... but what im trying to say is, if some unforseen circumstances were to pop up tomorrow concerning me kids, then id gladly go out an cull all me dogs an give them up, until there was a time i could work dogs again, i idolise me dogs an give them everything, but i love my kids unconditionally.... there again there folks who use new baby/new job/moving house/an loads more other excuses to sell on dogs they dont want for 1 reason or another but there will be the decent guy out there who genuinley has to get rid for 1 of the reasons stated Edited January 16, 2012 by reddawn
6pack 60
And from a rescue point of view when they then add it will be PTS if you don't take it - like it's 'our' fault the dogs dies due to them being a prick!
SneakyD 5
Doesn't make any sense, having a kid is the perfect reason to get a dog. A kid without a dog is like cornflakes without milk.

There will be ones who know what they are doing, control their dog and don’t let it possess over their child (I cringe when people tell you with pride how their dog guards the baby) etc. If the dog shows a bad sign they will accept they made a mistake somewhere and ask for help, get a professional in and maybe build a kennel and keep them separate until the kid grows up. But the ‘new baby’ line is thrown about like it is a 100% legitimate reason to scrap a family pet, citing the reasons you just said ‘my kids come first’. I am not being daft, I know kids will take priority but how many parents are just ignorant, jump the gun when they have created the problem themselves and then ‘gladly cull’ their dogs because of it? I am in a bad mood today (like normal) so don’t want to have a go at any individual. I really enjoyed doing volunteer work at shelters, but it was almost countered out by having to control my temper around the dozens of moron owners, dropping off year-old staffies with tits dragging on the ground using the above excuse. Most were lying, but I can’t see why that is a preferable lie to ‘I can’t be assed’.

There are rescue shelters that would do their best to get the right home for a dog needing one, but they wouldn't get paid. Some people think it is soft to see a dog as part of the family instead of being a tool, these are the people I think are missing out on some of the best parts of hunting. gnipper 6,778
It's not just lurchers and terriers that get passed about, someone in my birds family have had over 10 pet dogs in 4 years and about 5 cats too and that's just ones i know of. I think some people can't help themselves when trawling the ads on the net.
mackel 31
can understand all the comments and people just dont give enough taught into buying dogs but if it got to the choice of dogs or kids i know which one i would choose but in saying that i will always have dogs but if it came to the point where i could not give some of my working dogs the time and effort they need to be fit and work well i would have no problem giving them to people that would put more time into them that you trust . is this so bad . to me there is no point in leaving a half decent dog out in a pen with little time being put into the dog if it would make some one really happy.the only sad thing is people just make excuses for loosing interest mack
lurcher330 2,301
Jesus most lads with a new baby would be happy to have a dog to work. just if it means getting out for a few hours here and there We had a new baby a few months ago and i done the opposite i got another pup,and some of the best time me and the the kids have is out and about with the dogs. it's simple 9 times out of 10 it's the bird putting her foot down and saying get rid of the dog. Having a baby is not meant to be the end of your life ,it's meant to be a new chapter having working dogs is not a hobby it's a way of life and if you cant fit them in with having children you shouldn't have them in the 1st place

littlefish 596
Didnt think people needed an excuse these days , just get rid regardless judging by the amount punted on here Yes, unfortunately dogs in today's society are seen as disposable. Sad really. I hope people take better care of their kids than they do their poor dogs.
