bunnys 1,236
I AM FULLY AWARE of the continious use in non peds charps , ALLWAYS GONE ON but only in times of necesity when the gene pool needed peping up , the f1s were usually scratch dogs of about 40pounders . not the massive types there his to be seen today in some cases . the whipps i refer to are those wicarrying the grey gene a few generations back but are in the standard of whipps but run like greys . these types are mainluy bred for the track and abit of rabbiting these are the types that were introduce into some of the pld coursing lines with great results no need for straight grey bllod in vast quantities in the field . only my oppinion but have seen how disastrious this can be and the ruinious affect it can have on an allready quality line . heavily base bred types may seem to benefit from an outcros to grey , but can come back to bite one when bred on from . constant breeding backward and forward from base to grey his willy nilly and can be nither here or there , fixing qualitys in aline one has to go down the familiar route and start to breed the desired traits in the line , only my oppinion. rigorious selection his the key and the dividends will pay higher ratio of good uns per litter . Crossing to greys will get ya smart fast lookers , but the chances of the negative s over the entire litter will out weigh the positves . atb bunnys. Quote Link to post

lurcher330 2,301
When the lurcher's i have at the moment are starting to slow down a bit i plan on getting a greyhound and breeding genuine 1st x's from her, that way i know the extact breeding and have a good idea what to exspect from the litter Quote Link to post
Richie10 345
To be honest i'd be amazed in all honesty if there was as many 1st x Saluki /Grey's as there is made out to be...everyone and their fathers seems to have one but where are all the pure Saluki's? I'd bet my bottom dollar there is only a handful out there (pure Saluki's) doing a bit of graft and if EVERY 1st cross is bred out of those then i wish i owned one of them because i'd be a millionaire with the stud fees lol..ATB Andy. I understand what you are saying, Andy, but I wasn't realy refering to First crosses, more to what you did to produce Don, for example. That is putting a "pure" back into a Lurcher line every now and again. Some like Dan and Whin are dead set against it, while others do it. Cheers. If it works I'm all for it but I seriously doubt if a dog that was half saluki, greyhound, or deerhound could make it at my house. The saluki would run the other way, the greyhound would fall apart and the deerhound from what I've seen wouldnt ever get there so the answer has to be no for me. You are only one on this that has a future with hunting dogs, ours is looking bleak and the need to continue the lines will diminish as the law clamps down on us. Quote Link to post

Well I sure hope that shit changes for you and everybody over there soon. I dont see it happening but I guess it could. I hate it that yall have lost the right to hunt with dogs. It just aint right. I sure hope it never happens over here. Quote Link to post
border lad 1,047
My choice would be saluki every time and thats not baised on wat ive read in books but wat i have seen with my own eyes and imho a greyhound should only be used to produce first crosses then never used again. but some time down the line, you have to inject speed into the line, ((( maybe grey/whippet or greyhound, nothing worse, seeing a dog with No gears, but can stay all day, and on the other hand, a flying machine that just canny pick the bloody thing up,breeding is a fine line, without doubt the saluki, has greatly improved the lurcher/ running dog, for Edible, and especially for a good course,, (((( not these five minute wonders, not my cup of tea, in 10to 20acre field, we need saluki/grey/whippet,type 1 Quote Link to post
staffs riffraff 1,068
would any of you use a pure grey thats bred from good stuff but used as a lurcher and has got decent wind quite robust and will tackle anything if given xhance. obviously wouldnt be as good as a good lurcher allround but could show a few up Quote Link to post
