Nationalism

I`m Scottish

But I am also British,, and proud of it,, I have no time for dividing this nation ,or the xenophobia and bigotry that goes with it !.

What I am a bit bewildered with , is the posts recently, by Englishmen, basically stating that they want the Union broken. I genuinely thought that the majority of Englishmen were British first and foremost,! Am I wrong ??

Our forefathers fought hard for the British nation, without a thought of independance or splitting the country up.. They believed we were British together and gave their lives for that notion. Would they be impressed ?? I doubt it.

Do we really believe that we have nothing else to worry about ? other than fighting against each other,, is the nation not under enough attack ??

I am genuinely interested in well thought out answers to this, as I really am surprised,(and slightly dissapointed) by this revelation.

I just know, my Grandfather served Britain, And so do I

In a lot of cases it is just pretend lines drawn on an ancient map by some figure in the murky past. Lines that don't really exist, well they do in the imagination of a lot of folk. I try to bear that

The people are told they have to pay in order to keep the business, financial and political elite in the great style to which they are accustomed and will fight tooth and nail to keep things that way.

Rake aboot

My grandparents fought in the second world war and it does boil my piss when i hear that folks from other parts of the UK want independence.

I have to wonder what they want independence for?

Do they expect some miracle to happen that they will all be wealthy and happy? Please shed some light on this for me.

My family fought for the UK, not soley England, as if England had been invaded, then surley Wales and Scotland would have fallen as well. We are interlinked wether we like it or not. Some do, some dont.

I personally think that we are better off sticking together as one, united we are a strong country, devided we are weak.

On a side issue that is current at the moment, i do feel that we have been let down this week by the english parliment on the issue of a referendum on the point of the EU.

I think we SHOULD have been given the chance to voice our opinion on should we be in the European Union or not. After all our relations fought and died over this issue not so many years ago. (Some would argue the issue was different, its not that different when you boil things down. We are now being governed by Germany)

Good post, Rake, and a sentiment I agree with.

I'm English as I was born here. My Dad's families catholic Irish and my ex wife's Welsh although I don't hold it against Wales for her

I can't understand why some folks keep on dragging up things from our past historys and taking any and every chance to throw them at other folks. We, the normal working class British are not guilty of what any of our past leaders did to further their own ambitions or agendas. Yes it can be argued that as an alleged democracy 'we' voted them in but it goes back much further than democracy in these debates, back to the times of kings, clans, tribes and lords. How far back do we hold a grudge?

It'd be nice to move on and get on, FFS. Learn from the past by all means but don't drag it around like a ball and chain. There's enough shit that's threatening our nation without in-fighting :victory:

Thanks for the answers,,

And I`m glad you share my sentiment.

I could go on about Scottish Nationalism,, the idiot Salmong, and his admittion on Scotland Tonight, that he would hand over oil revenue to the EU,,( go on ,,,say he didn`t !!!!),, but I won`t

Keep the answers coming.. I genuinely want to hear why people aren`t British.

my grandfathers fought in both wars but they wernt fighting for no nation they were fighting to put a loaf on the table

There were many reasons to fight in the wars,, Conscription, expectation, and other pressures,, not many fought for money

Too many advantages to us splitting up for us to ignore imo.

more so for the English.

what advantages?

i also class myself as british.have a lot of respect for all the nations of the uk,and we been through some shit together and came out on top.yes there are idiots on both sides who hate the scottish/english and would like to see the union disolved.however i tend to ignore them cause its pretty obvious thier only claim to this has more to do with them being anti one or the other. And casually disregard the benefits of keeping a strong a union.

I support a United Kingdom of Great Britain. I would support a Welsh, Scott or Northern Irish man as strongly as any Englishman.

I think alot of English that talk of the other UK nationalities poorly and support breaking up the UK only do so because they are sick of certain Scotts etc bleating on about how they want independance and how much better off they would be. I think the vast majority of sensible people support a United Britain.
