Out this morning. . .

Recommended Posts

Being as it was Sunday today, i had a full day at the rabbits planned with Johnnyboy and Young Tom. However due to unforseen circumstances, both had to cancel on me at very late notice. As a result i couldnt head where i had planned, being undermanned and under dogged.

However i got up this morning and went out for a walk in the woods around first light, just for an hour or two, took the old jill Ruby and the mutt.

Got the first mark on a fairly large set, netted up and stuck the old girl down, she shot down like a rocket, very happy to be back at it. A little rumbling and the first rabbit of the morn slams into a net and the dog grabs it, net back on and rabbit dispatched as the second hits another net, tries to flip out but is held by the dog again.

Carry on a bit more and then get another mark under a tree, on a banking, nets on, ferret in and it sounds like the rabbit is climbing up the tree on the inside, then back down, bit more quiet and then it slams into a far net, and the dog gets there long before i do.

Onwards again, with the dog having a rake about, scareing a few pheasants, and then another mark a long a fence line. Dog one side, me the other, nets on and ferret down, after a long time a little rabbit nose appears, sees me and fecks back off down into the darkness, then some banging and aome squeeling and rabbit is trying to back out of a far hole (on my side) with the ferret attached to it's face. Job done.

Looped back around to the car, and on the way got a mark around a brush pile, netted up the best i could, stuck in the ferret and after a bit get some banging from one side of the pile, me and the dog rush over that side, as the rabbit pulls a fast one and bolts out of the far side, we both rush for it, i jump at it and get a handfull of barbed wire, cutting my hand open, i tangle the dog up and he ends up on his ass, and the rabbit makes it's escape. Mutt manages to get back up it's ass though and guides it into another set.

Nets on the other set, a nice small six holer, but around a thown tree, with some tricky to get to holes, jill down, and after a bit the rabbit hits the furthest net, it tangles and he gets free, but the mutt manages to get on him within ten yards and snatches him up by the back legs. He comes back, pleased as punch, the jill comes up and does her little war dance in the now warm sun, and we all have a very nice moment sat together in the ground in a heap, ferret, dog, bunny and me (probably less nice for the bunny!).

And then i go home to sort out my hand.

Not the usual, full, productive day, but i nice walk, and five heallthy bunnys in the bag. Really good to see the old jill doing her stuff, even though she is pretty much blind, and good to see the dog make a catch, even though is is a bit crippled already at a young age (the leg has still not come right and i dont think it will, think he banged the wrist hard).

Unfortunatly i left the memory card of the camera at home, so only an end of day photo.

And a photo from last time i was out on this bit of land, just to show how bad it is for running dogs, especially a whippet!

Cheers mate, was planning a full day and hitting a decent amount, but it was not to be. Still, nice to get out for a couple of hours. It's still way to warm here and way to much cover to find much to ground.

Cheers guys!

Tyla - it's ok mate, makes a nice change that it was me that hit it and not the mutt, i'm running out of bits to stitch up on him.

You would be better with a terrier x for your job maybe??

Aye mate, you are probably right! Planning a well bred collie x for the next pup, around xmas time. Something with a bit of coat. Although that's planned as a lamping dog.

A little terrier x, like a beddy x or something would probably suit well, for the ferreting, something to take the knocks.

If they were not so hard to come by, i would get a decent, well bred beddy, and eventually breed my own, with finn, but they are like rocking horse shit.

I can't fault finn at all on his working ability though, he is a great ferreting companion and daytime hunting dog, but its f*****g murder on him, he has scars and stitches everywhere.

Cheers malc. It was nice this morn, just a wee walk for a couple of hours, but then when the sun came out it was too warm, nothing to ground and after my tussle with the wire, i thought sitting in the garden with the mutt seemed like a better idea
