Born Hunter 17,910
Saw this on the news this morning and the words "disgusting" etc are being thrown about. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-14998593 I personally think it's being blown way outa proportion! "The children were not doing cage fighting, they were just grappling, there was no punching, kicking or striking," Thoughts?..............

marshman 7,758
Its no different to a judo bout or ju juitsu. I think it's blown out of proportion!
blan89 159
it's just wrestling, kids do it all over the world. just like boxing, kickboxing etc no-one's forcing them.
Malt 379
I don't see the harm if they're just grappling, as long as it's very closely controlled. I did think to myself that there should be some protective gear worn though, especially if there was any striking involved..

Agree malt, but the fact is there is no striking so theres no need for protective gear. I think people are seeing two young kids grappling in a cage surrounded by paying punters and thinking the worst. Typical media health and safety PC bullshit. I bet those kids felt 10 feet tall having such an audiance!

rob190364 2,594
It speaks volumes when the head of the NSPCC "strongly discourages parents from letting their kids take part in activities like this" but he probably wouldn't bat an eyelid if a kid was sat in front of the telly or computer slowly getting obese. It's disciplined and it's getting them fit. No different to jujitsu or anything like that, it just hasn't got a fancy oriental name. If it didn't have the words 'cage' and 'fighting' in the title it probably wouldn't have even made the news!

mattydski 560
As long as its controlled, and disciplined, I dont have a problem. My kids both represent Scotland in Karate, and are travelling to Hungary next week for an international 'Scrap'. Its controlled light contact fighting... Very disciplined....!! So as I said, as long as it is carried out in that vain...

Mooch. 177
This yet another complete non-story, media hype, storm in a tea cup stuff. Someone would complain if kids took up competitive knitting on the grounds that they could hurt themselves on the pointy needles. My son will be learning a martial art just as soon as he's old enough (12 weeks old might be a bit early to start him!).
Malt 379
Agree malt, but the fact is there is no striking so theres no need for protective gear. I didn't know when I saw the piece on the news about the no striking. I'm sure it's very carefully controlled & all precautions are being taken. It seems it's basically wrestling/judo type stuff they're doing then? No problems with that if that's the case. I reckon the adverse media coverage is because MMA is a relatively new phenomenon. I reckon something like Karate, boxing or kickboxing were introduced in today's society there'd be the same media bullshit. If there'd been a few rocky/karate kid/kung fu type films based on MMA, maybe people would more easily accept it.. I reckon the fact that it takes place in a cage doesn't help in these cases either. If it took place in a normal ring there wouldn't be half the fuss about it.
