johnny boy68 11,726
Great write up JJ Was another great day of social ferreting in good company as always. The dogs and ferrets worked well again I was real happy with the pup(Luna)she's really starting to show some real promise, especially has I've been doubting her and thinking she wasn't going to make the grade I'm so glad she's starting to prove me wrong. My highlight of the day was turning towards Young Tom as the 2 bunnies bolted from the warren that he'd put his ferrets in and to see the young lad with a smile like a chesire cat,it must have been such a buzz for him. @patterdale joel thanks for the comments about the dogs,Luna is bull/whip/grey x beddy/grey,she's 13 months old,22 tts and is a great dog to have around. She's got lots of character and after a slow start is really starting to show some real promise, she's got a good nose and speed to burn. Gem is a 5/8 grey 3/8 collie she's 7 year old,22.5 tts now she's so different from the pup she will just get on with her job in the calmest of manners until the rabbit bolts then her inner crocodile comes out. Looking forward to next weekend to get back at it again. Here's a few shitty pics off the mobile. Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
Great write up! Sounds a good day and the lad must be proper buzzing! Loving the attire on the third pic from the bottom, thought it was a screenshot from 'a passion for angling' for a minute Just a little off subject, and I know it's probably an unfair comparison due to ages of dogs etc. but how does that collie x compare to ideations whippet for pace? just out of interest? Ideation 8,217
Alright alright so the hats a bit gay, it was raining! Rob - it's a funny one the speed thing. I would say that reaction wise around a bolt, at the moment Gem is quicker off the mark, due to her experiance, but when it comes to flat out speed over short and middle distance, finn is faster i would say, and then if you took it over say a mile of running, then Gem would be faster due to her stamina. Perhaps? Quote Link to post

Firstly Rob Jai did strike a uncanny resemblance to Chris Yates with his Crocodile Dundee hat on. I think Jai's whippet is faster off the mark as you'd expect with him being a whippet though I'm not sure about top end speed as Gem can shift, maybe we'll try and race them this weekend and find out. But as Jai said Gem's reaction time around holes is lightening quick. Quote Link to post

Perhaps? Fairly even match then? give or take a couple of yards? No I like it, makes a nice change from some of the trainers and trackies you see on some peoples pics! plus, you're not going to get suspected of poaching if you wander off the beaten track, people will just think you're either going to a fancy dress or are on your way to the hillbillies YMCA tribute act convention! Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,217
Haha Rob, you are a nutter mate, just spat some pasta across my desk! I must admt i do look a bit strange most of the time, and in that photo i ain't even wearing my chaps haha. With regard to the dogs, it's a good combination. Last season we worked Gem and Finn together a lot on big mountainside daytime, and ferreting, a lot of the time he would range off and find game with his nose and then get it moving with some raw pace, and Gem would end up watching him, using her brain and then positioning herself for the catch. She runs very clever, but also as Johnnyboy said, she has great pace over distance, she is of course 5/8 greyhound so you would expect it, but i think the shaggy coat makes you forget how racy she is. It was a surprise, but a pleasant one, to watch Luna blast past her yesterday to catch a rabbit that a couple of months ago would have had Gems name all over it. I am really looking forward to working the three dogs (and a friends half x) together on the mountain later in the winter. But we REALLY need to add a little cover dog, using the whippet like a terrier to smash cover, is not an ideal long term solution. Quote Link to post
