Ideation 8,217
Today, being Sunday, found me up early doors and on the road to fetch Johnnyboy68, his two dogs and a ferret. Back to mine for a quick cuppa, grab a couple of my jills, nets etc and out the door. Unfortunately my whippet Finn is in sick bay, so he was staying home today, much to his displeasure. I'm sure he howled the house down all day! Anyway, headed to some paddocks first where the cover is down (ish), and just as we stepped out of the car, the heavens opened. Not great, but better than the fecking heat! Had a mooch up a hedge row, over a fence, and got a decent mark on a set strung a long the fence line. Netted up, dropped the ferret in, and stood back. After a bit of a pause, and some rumbling, the first rabbit of the day hit a net Johnnyboys side, only for the net to catch on some nettles, allowing the rabbit to kick free and take off across the field. However it wasn't counting on the dogs and it was VERY neatly run down and scooped up mid flight, by the young bitch Luna, her first 'ferreting catch' (she has had a good few daytime mooching and on the lamp). She is shaping up into a cracking all round dog. Carried on, into a spinny, got another mark and started netting up, to be joined by young tom, complete with a nasty head cold (little trooper!). Finished netting up, dropped the jill in and had a bunny try to sneak into a net, to be grabbed by the crocodile (Gem). Nets off, and carried on, the dogs put two bunnys into a big patch of cover, but unfortunately one went to ground in an inaccessible spot and the other made good it's escape on the non dog side of the fence. Back to the car, and moved to a different set of small paddocks, got a mark in a set in a rough patch, with some fallen logs and other branches. Nets on, ferret in, then got a bolt, which flipped out of the net (caught on cover), only to be caught by the arse by my little silver jill (out of the net). Continued on across this field, and got a half mark on a half dozen holes in the open field. Decided to give young Toms kits a run, as they are 6 and 4 months old (one bred by me and one by johnnyboy). Down went both kits straight away, and after a little bit, we decided there may actually be something home, just as two scutties bolted out the same hole to be (unfortunately) scooped up one each by the two dogs. Both ferrets appeared behind them. LIttle Tom was buzzing like a fride! A great sight, the first time, his first ferrets bolted something! Further on, got a nice mark on a fence line set, netted up, jill in, and after a bit of silence, and then some rumbling, the first rabbit hit the net Toms side of the fence, which he jumped on, and then replaced the net. In his excitement he hadn't replaced the net properly, and rabbit number two hit the same net, throwing it off, and made off across the field, to be run down by Gem. Onwards we go, to another rough little spinny, got a mark, in a horrendous pile of brambles, straddling two fences managed to net up what we could. Got two bolts at the same time, the first into a net deep within the brambles which i managed to dive into and grab the bunny (painful) and one from a hidden hole even deeper within the cover, which made the short dash across the clear, and under a seven bar gate, up the lane and into a hedge, just missed by Gem. It's important to note that this second rabbit was the first we have bolted all season with the ferrets and not caught, well. . . . . not at the set in question. . . . . (more later haha). Continued across the paddocks, had a look at some horses and then decided to head back to the car, first via a ditch, where there are sets but we have never had a mark. This time however, got a good strong mark on one of the sets, and managed two from it. Continued our mooch through the paddock and back up onto the lane, heading toward the car (the lane the rabbit escaped along). The dogs started working some scent up the lane, and suddenly pulled into the hedge, where i remembered there was a two holer, which was now, on inspection a three holer. Nets on, ferret in, a bit of squealing, in goes johnnyboys hand, bit of a shout as the ferret mistakes his hand for another rabbit and the final rabbit of the day is in the bag, yards from the car. Back home to dry out, warm up and drink a much needed cuppa! My phone died toward the start of the day so not many photos! Very pissed off . . . . . 2 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,217
Darbo - aye mate, that kid is a star, not many teenagers like him about these days! pj - i'd say she is about 22 / 22.5 " tts I would guess. She is fast as fook, very nice natured, and developing into a good dog. Decent nose, strike, turning etc. Looking forward to seeing how she does over the next couple of years. She is owned by johnnyboy68 on here so he's the best one to answer any questions, i'm sure he will comment at some point. Quote Link to post
