I'm after a little advice.

I have kept a few chickens for a while now, mainly for the eggs, and have enjoyed having them about.

I am thinking of keeping 'something else' but am not sure what?

I'm looking for a bird that lays eggs, possibly can be eaten (not essential), and is fairly hardy.

They will be kept outside in a fair sized run, it can be roofed with wire, and will have a hutch within the run, they will probably be kept on their own alongside the chickens rather than in the same run.

Could have free range of the garden with the chickens as well, but if that's not possible then that's fine.

Any suggestions, i've never kept any birds other than chickens and pheasants and ducks (on the shoot).

P.S - Don't really want ducks.

f**k that Ideation, get some Khaki Campbell ducks, only need a shallow washing up type bowl for water and lay like f**k, a duck egg in a bacon butty will have it running down your chin like an amateur

Ducks also make one hell of a mess: if there's water they just have to splash it all over the place, then paddle about in it: if you don't want a sea of mud then don't get a duck! Yes, I know the egg

If you get stuck Scot, Im down south coming back up Thursday.....

How small a water place do they need? I really, really don't fancy ducks, well i do, but i fancy something different that i have never had before, just been rearing 100's of the feckers on the shoot. . . . . .

If you get a meat tray from the butchers or an old galv type bath thats all they need really, although they will swim if given a bigger pond, as long asthey can wash and preen themselves tha'll be happy. And they will lay like a one armed rapist .lol.

Yes, I know the eggs are just delicious, but not worth the mess, unless you have a massive great field or orchard for them to potter about in. Just my opinion.

Japanese Quail sound like the most likely so far. How hardy are they?

They are pretty hardy but when the winter get's here and it start's dropping below freezing you might need to move them into a cage inside a shed..
