fresh earth 47
To be completely honest mate i dont run coursing dogs i have done in the past but were all bitchs i bought at around 12-15 months and every one was goosed due to it being over worked for a pup. From my experience with whippets and greyhounds though id personaly be holding back till it was 12 months then start to run it idealy starting its first season at around 16 months thats what age im entering two iv been bringing on just now and its going well i never see any hurry but i always have something to use so i can afford to wait a little longer. In the past i entered them about the 9 month mark but tbh i dont own any of them anymore as all ended up with reocuring injurys hence waiting a little longer now. Quote Link to post
lurchermania 25
if by ginger one you mean mr charlie then i dare say your a silly idiot and risked ruining a good dog.. if your pup had been bit he would ov been spoilt instantly and as for 8 months on rabbits thats too young he is still growing he will end up not being able to turn too well and his muscles in a bad condition as the bne will grow and stretch the muscles and he will be more prone to injury.. you have a lot to learn or meby you have learned but off the wrong pearson all i can say is let him grow spend the next 4 -6 month on obedience and fitness but please dond keep working him the way you are you will not do him any good Quote Link to post
scothunter 12,609
about a year old on bunnies at the least.before the ban around 16 17 months on hares Quote Link to post
bradaz2009 9
normally i would argue with the shit spouted on here but these 2 are correct pal dont risk it wait a couple of months rather than giving him to much to soon and gettin a jacka or a shit dog then havin to wait 8 months startin with a pup again mine will get out with me now to learn the rope so to speak then no graft till she nearly a year old but its your dog pal do what u want but obviously you want the best for your dog or you wunt be asking on here Quote Link to post

goshawking719 492
Everydog is individual-some are ready for a few easy runs/ being slipped in at 6-7 months... Easy runs where you know they will catch without over doing it- some might not be ready until later. You should know when your own pup is ready.... Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
The best lurcher i have ever owned ran his first rabbit on a walk out at 9 mths old, he never even looked like catching it, to say i was pissed off at the time was an understatement.then i thought why, i just let him grow up a few more months and the next thing he tried for was at 13 mths old and he caught his first daylight winter hare.this dog never looked back.so since i never try to push them into anything, i dont think my latest pup (8 mths on tuesday) will see a rabbit on the lamp this season.he may run a few if he finds day light ones. his sire was 12 mths old before he caught on the lamp, and was a lot more forward Quote Link to post

WILF 49,206
I think you really need to know what your doing to start stuff early, but my view is....why take a chance. Sure, slip a pup in when stuff has been caught...but thats it. As for asking a puppy to tackle foxes, well IMHO its either bollocks or madness.....but hey,its not my dog! Quote Link to post
graham4877 1,181
my bitch is 13month now and i took her from just under 8 month she court her 1st at 8 1/2 , sounds good eh!! but if and when i get a new pup i wont be taking it out till 10.1/2 month to watch maybe slip it a 11month on a sitter! maybe even later! you will see a big change in a 12 month old dog to a 8month one!! i know they look fully grown but their not you'll f**k a pups tendons up running it to much and their feet will spread!
