just read a post saying coursing men who own long dogs. ?

firstlie i think long dogs has been made up and used by the likes of plummber and others (not Darcy) who write books because they keep collie cross dogs. and try to portray other crosses as brainless athletes. by writes id say only the traditional a herding dog x gry or whips a true lurcher.

i class mine as lurchers, not many coursing breed dogs if you follow the lines back wont have breeds other than sight hound in.

if they can do a day or nights work there a lurcher theres anoth divids as ther is!

well said agree with that totally the name longdog is quite an old fashioned name and not many people use it nowadays theyre all lurchers imo

a longdog is any type or breed of running dog eg greyhound,deerhound.whippit,saluki,bozoi.etc crossed with each other a lurcher is a running dog cross eg terriers,herding dogs ,or any other breed basically hope thats cleared it up a bit or helped atb biza

Most greyhoundy shaped dogs are capable of catching game if given the opportunity and have enough game put in front of them, but if you want to define the true meaning and the original job that said lurchers were intended to do then to my mind saluli, borzoi and all the exotic crosses whilst they have their own specialist traits, they are not lurchers in the true sense of the word.

One thing I really like about the running dog world is it doesnt matter what a dog looks like or how its bred, all that matters is how well it grafts. Now all this "thats not a 'true' lurcher, its a longdog" or vice versa is aload of bollocks! If ya wanna get technical then yes they are different with obviously a margin a grey area inbeteween. But who really gives a feck? We breed and work running dogs (whatever you wish to call em) to suit our own specific needs and preferences and at the end of the day if the dog fits the bill of a running dog and can catch its quarry on the run then I think you are entitled to call it what ever you want, and feck the purists!

but certain sighthound crosses ,,,,are defenilty quicker,,,,,THAT IS THE MAIN DIFFRENCE BETWEEN ,,,LURCHER AND LONG DOG ( u can breed a long dog to be quicker than lurcher and ped whippet,,,,,and as been proved more recently just as quick or faster than the advrege pure greyhound

 

there speed to be had,,,,with a long dog,,,,,,,,if u can get both speed and stamia and speed ,,,,hold on to that longdog,,as its very hard to get both

imo a longdog or the term long dog is just a name given to lurchers wih a long back and is more often used to describe hare coursing dogs whereas the smaller types ie beddy whippet crosses etc which are shorter in the back are not put into the category as a longdog but are 2 of the same thing at the end of the day lurchers

longdogs are a pure breed or a cross between any of the long dogs but lurchers were created to hunt but not to look like a running dog(longdog) back in the days when it was illegal for normal folk to hunt but now longdogs are just racing machines imo or show dogs and lurchers are or should be bred worker to worker(best to best) and remember speed aint everything normally if they got good top end speed they lack on the turn..... Well thats my oppinion anyway
