Baiting Rats?

Recommended Posts

My friend has a small rat problem in his back garden, and he text me today to say hes found about 6 holes next to a burn in his garden that he thinks are where the rats are. I was thinking of baiting them out if possible, and then shooting them from a shed in his garden. Has anyone ever baited rats before?

Also, what would the law be on me doing this? Taking into consideration his house is in a residential area, dont want to do it unless i know its actually legal. My other option would be to put the ferrets in but not to sure about this either.

Hi mate i use a cheap tin of dog food with holes punch in to it then stand on it a bit so the juices drip out,the rats have to lick the juice as they can not run away with it giving you a bit extra time to aim and shoot.

You can shoot them in the garden with a airifle just make sure you have a good backstop and make sure none of your pellets leave the confines of the garden

A mate told me about this the other day, dont know if it would work on not, wet the floor where you want to whack the rats, then sprinkle hot chocolate powder on the wet patch so it sticks, then whack the knawing gits as they try to lap it up :D

Hi John,

A good treat for a rats and squizzers in that matter is peanut butter with a few unsalted peanuts added.

They really love it and a rat will even go into a squizzer trap to get at it.

I’ve personally had this happen to me twice last year where a rat as been found in my squizzer trap after the peanut butter and nuts.

You are allowed to shoot on your friends rented property as long as the pellet stays within his own boundary.

Place a good back stop (normally wood as it absorbs the pellet well) and side stops around the bait to stop sideward ricochets and the pellet leaving his boundary via over shooting.

A good tip would also be to also zero the rifle at the range that you intend to shoot the rat at (normally not in excess of 10 to 15 metres really) unless you are sure of your hold under on the combo that you are using.

Let us know how you get on

Cheers lads. Went round to his tonight and just had a quick look. Could see the holes, but there are a good few places in his garden they could be hiding so suppose we would just have to put a few baits out n sit and wait to see if anything happens, they are defo there so should hopefully be productive :gunsmilie:
