Cartridges and knife in car

Recommended Posts

I like to keep a few bits n bobs for shooting/hunting/dog stuff in the car all the time which i find very usefull. 2 things which concern me slightly, however im unware of any law prohibiting it, first being shotgun cartridges and second being a knife. I like to keep a spare box of 25 cartridges in the car and also a good knife (both out of view of course). Am i breaking the law?

You could find yourself in trouble especially with the knife and cartridges in the car and no gun if it appears that your not using them for their specified purpose ie: cleaning/gutting game (knife) s

well your not with the carts , im led to believe you can leave them on your doorstep lol as for the knife dont you need a good reason to carry it . you would of thought any policeman that finds both together would put 1 + 1 together and see you have good reason.

i carry both and if the police dont like it i will have my day in court in my best tweeds lol

Good question. One that I'd like to know the answer to aswell.

I carry a 6" fixed blade sheath knife in my toolbox in the car all the time.

I have been told that carrying it in the course of carrying out your legitimate duties/business is not a crime.

If they searched my tool box they'd have a job to nick me for it. This was from a PCSO in our village. He's seen me with it out with my ferts and dog on a number of occasions and said nowt but I don't know whether this view would be that of others in the constabulary. I also carry a machete for clearing scrub..................? Although I do try and rememeber to remove that from the car when not hunting. But you know what an old mans memory is like?!

Regarding the knife ,I believe to be legal with the knife in the car, you need to be on your way to where it can legally be used or on your way home from that

place. Also you need to prove permission, there is no legitimate use for a knife in an illegal activity.

You could find yourself in trouble especially with the knife and cartridges in the car and no gun if it appears that your not using them for their specified purpose ie: cleaning/gutting game (knife) shooting (cartridges) Its not illegal to transport cartridges from A to B

You would'nt leave a shotgun in your car all the time so! why cartridges and a knife? Don't give yourself hassle by getting stopped by plod answering awkward questions about why you have a knife in your possesion, it might lead to you being charged and subsequently losing your SGC

Be safe and appear responsible by taking them out of the car when not in use

Tom

Ps: you need a reasonable excuse for carrying certain knives, Butcher, Chef's Joiners carpet fitters,(stanely knives) etc: and sporting users!

If you can't provide a reasonable excuse you could be fecked!! Its not reasonable to say I forgot to take them out the car or oh! I always leave them in there!!!!

You need good reason to carry a knife mate. Iv been done for carrying (being in possession of) an offensive weapon so i know! Lol! If you have one in the car but well out the way (ie: in the boot) your in the clear, if its in your pocket/glovebox/passenger seat you must have a reason for it being there (ie: im on my way to go fishing/shooting/i need it for work to open packaging and im on my way to work). Cartridges, just keep out of sight. Again, the boots a good place for um.

You could be charged with carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.

Your car IS a public place, In the boot of the car is NOT a public place.

If you can come up with a legit reason for having it the it`s all down to the cops that have caught you.

If you have no gun in the car, but have cartriges, you will have a hard time convincing them you`ve been shooting.

i got pulled over in scotland.

I had the dog in the car. was asked what i was doing so i told them

"looking to see if theres many rabbits, then ask for permission"

anyway taken off to the police station, asked me if i had anything so i told them about a 3" folding lock knife i had in the back of the seat. He just looked at it and put it on back seat of me car.

Now, wouldnt you think the police would of asked me why i had the knife, if i wasnt hunting :clapper:

Now, i take no risks. Even when driving to or from permission i tape the knife up and put it out of my immediate reach

I have a steel box bolted down in the boot big enough for a broken down shotty I leave any spare carts and a selection of knives in there its always padlocked and the key hidden so if I get a pull and Ive not been out with the dog or shooting I just tell plod that the key for the box is in the house and I only carry it when hunting
