Guest Chip
I was mooching around a bit of new permission today and bumped into a nice old fella it turns out he used to do a fair bit of hunting and a little with the terriers. we must have stood there gassing for an hour he tells me he moved over here from donegal ireland back in the 50,s and them days there was a bounty on fox and would be paid for every fox killed. he said the police or official you took them to would nick the foxes tongue to stop you claiming for the same fox twice by taking it to another police station they must of been plague proportions back then to have a bounty on them any light on it?? its all history thinking back to our chat im unsure wether the bounty was in ireland or uk when he moved over.. dev 227
there was a bounty on foxes in the north of ireland at the time for sure, one of the old guys from my neck of the woods caught so many that he was called" foxy pat" a name that stuck with him till he died last year. Quote Link to post
lawrence 657
there was one in Ireland, i think you got paid per brush produced at the local police station, though not 100% on that, i dare say there's boys on here would know better. Quote Link to post
jimmys shop 182
i know there was a bounty on foxe,s in Ireland in the ,S ,there was well known guys from Waterford who could enlighten you to all the old skull duggery about conning the Garda Siochanna into paying twice . Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,907
Does anyone know exactly why there was bountys for dead foxes? Im assuming possibly during the war to protect valuable meat supplies, farm stock and game etc. Quote Link to post
Guest Chip
do you reckon it were a bit of a fibb about the notch in the tongue???? or maybe an older method before the brushes were traded in the old fella said it worked out to about 50p a fox and said it was good money back then... foxfan 479
Dont know about a bounty, but in the 80s a prime pelt was worth £25 (maybe they still are, i dont know) from "cobbledicks" I'm sure a bounty wouldnt pay that much, so why would you bother with it ? Quote Link to post

foxfan 479
The money went out of the pelts in the late 80s, then we had the mange epidemic in the 90s, i think cobbledicks, who were the sole buyers of pelts in the uk have gone out of business. But if the pelts are worth aanything now, i think we will see a resurgence in pelt hunters, now that folk are losing their jobs again. Quote Link to post

breffni 3
The anti fur fuuukers put a stop to it in the 80s. There was a good bounty for grey crows as well,i heard some funny stories about them. But to slow at typing to tell them. Quote Link to post
liamdelaney 2,587
I made a living out of it in the eightes. Digging em snaring and lamping.25 pounds per fox.A farrier bought them in Limerick and it was good money back then. With nobody working we were glad of it.You had to use a soft dog when digging a hard dog would damage the pelt and it was worth less. desertdog 149
i can remember back inthe eighties, pelts being sent down to cobbledicks, £25 for wet pelt, the lads also used to sell them in hertford mkt and get between £12 and £17 each, old jim tookey would buy them and sell them on.i reckon it all went tits up, when the antis kicked up about fur farming.
