  1. It's a three horse race with the hw 97 or 77 but not sure about long or short and my back stop will be to try a prosport and a silencer.
  2. Thanks treecreeper I am sure you are right but which one hw 97k or hw 77 in long or carbide barrel and does it need a silencer ?
  3. Hello guys Thanks for sharing your wisdom with me. I have been out again after work with the hw 97, it's 10 or more years old and it shoots real sweet. I have had a good read about the hw77 which I had missed because I thought it was the one under the 97. I have some questions about the hw77 :- so it's longer than the 97 and has no silencer so is it loud and is it to long with a silencer on. I am looking forward to getting hold of one as I think my short list is Hw97 hw77 and Air Arms pro sport and I think I will know then I try them back to back.
  4. I have picked up some real good point so far that I would not of thought of and will buy some checking gear before I buy. I think I will buy a new rifle and it's looking like the HW? is the one for me.
  5. Just to confirm that I don't have my own air rifle, I am using other peoples rifles on private land to try out different guns. The main one that I am using is a 10 or so year old HW97. I am trying different guns as the shooters on the farm are bringing them in, most of these guys are shot gun guys that have air rifles from years ago. I am not trying to wind anyone up but have to say it's a bit scary for a new guy to get his head around and believe me when I say that I have been working very hard to check out what I should or should not do. One of you said you are not here to tell people h
  6. Hello Andy From Redcar Cleveland.
  7. Just to confirm that I could not give two hoots about 90 percent of users with no clue and will not be shooting with anybody who is flip about air gun use, I just want to do the right thing for me and my shooting buddys . I want to keep things nice and legal. I will get a gadget for checking but was told that if I had a second hand gun that went over that it would be taken off me if I took it to a gun shop.
  8. I was out after work with the HW97 and think I am getting used to it's weight, it was shooting real nice in one of the barns at about 20 mtrs shooting the top off a plastic milk container full of water.
  9. My head says get a HW97/77 and my heart says get the pro sport.
  10. Get it fettled you say and how would you do that as I am thinking the gun shop would just take it off you and land you in a load of bother. This subject is not mentioned in any buy your first gun articles ? I have talked to guys I am coming in contact with and they have had air rifles for years and they seem to have no clue about checking and fettling ?.
  11. Do you buy an air rifle based on the facts or have you ever through caution to the wind and been blown away by it's looks and feel ? What clinches the deal for you ?
  12. Do new guns go over and what about getting a second hand gun and finding out it has gone over ?
  13. Ok so do you all have the means to check your air rifles out put in ft lbs ? I have been advised to get some kit to monitor what power a rifle is putting out. Then there is the type of pellets thing, which are the ones that would cause this ? Ok so we have a new gun that was tested at the shop and was 11.4 and now it's 12.1 ft lbs, what do you do ?
  14. All the posts are a great help to me as you guys have lived with you guns and know the pit falls. My bench mark is the HW range as I am sure they will last the test of time, I wish someone could sum-up the entire HW range of springers and air rams as it is hard for a new guy to get his head around. I thought the 97 was above the 77 and was not sure about the break barrels but that may be an old view as things move on. I was going to look for an old bsa air sporter to start with but think for the money I would be better off with a HW but not sure which one. I would like the gun to last a li
  15. Just when I thought it was a two horse race another runner enters the race. It seems like a hw97/77/imp would all be a safe bet. I like the prosport and have handled it but not used it. I will try to look at the Walthers but the money is burning a hole in my pocket.
  16. Hello pj I am just looking as well and on my first trip to the gun shop I was a bit over-whelmed but the choice but soon sussed out that for a bit more money you can get one of the better makes. If you buy from a shop they will test the power I would hope but am not sure about this thing about guns going over.
  17. Hello Tim I am not sure what an A/T is ? Bob I have just re read your post (could go over with the pellets that the Police use) This is starting to spook me as I do not want to be any where near getting into any kind of bother but thanks for the advice.
  18. Hello Bri I am also looking for a gun in that price bracket and as Piano man has listed some real nice rifles I can't add to that list. What I would say is are you thinking springer ?. Do you like break barrel or under lever. Are you up for a heavy gun or do you want a lighter gun. Is your price just for the rifle or do you want a package of bag sight etc all for that price ?.
  19. Hello Pianoman Thanks for the reply. I have a short list and like the hw97k which I am using but don't own. I do like the look of the pro sport and it feels a bit like the hw 97 in weight which seem a tad heavy but if that's how it has to be to get quality then I will just have to get used to it. How dose the 77 differ from the other two. It's hard to sort out in my mind how the HW range sits. The hw 99 has been recommended as a full power lighter gun but don't no what the trade off would be.
  20. Hello Tankman from Redcar in Cleveland.
  21. Hello Bob I had thought about that but as a beginner you don't no what should be done. I know quite a few people with air rifles but they don't have that bit of kit. I also would not know how to temper the power of an overpowered air rifle. The only thing I could think of would be to leave the spring compressed for a length of time but that dose not sound very good for the gun.
  22. Hello guys I am not sure if this daft question but as you read the law and rules it is making me think about the Legal power limits. When buying a car you can tell a lot about it from the address and owner and the HPI checks etc but as I see it if the gun is over then you are in bother big time. If you buy of a gun smith/ trader and all the factory seals are on and you have the papers etc, it's a worry as fire arms offences are a place you can't go if you want to work for a living ? can you guys tell me how it is. If I get it wrong I get it wrong for all airsporters.
  23. Hello Rimfireboy I wondered about break barrel but was put off by some of the guys around the farm who only like underlever guns. I will have a try at the gun shop, would you go 177 and may be add a 22 later on ?
  24. Hello there I have looked at Air Arms as well and the pro sport is very similar. I have also looked at the tx200 and it's hard to define which would be the better gun' it's also hard to suss out the Weihrauch range even more so as there is so many in there line up. would it be fair to say that the pro sport is the top springer in there range and the hw 97 in the weihrauch range ?
  25. Hello guys I am just getting started with a friends hw 95 and it feels like a real good bit of kit. It seems heavier than I remember air rifles but it may be I should just use it and get used to how they shoots. At some point I will have to take the plunge and get my owm and the choice is vast.
