So, Tell Us, What Are Ye All At In The Veg Garden?
jok replied to JohnGalway's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Sorry pal. Missed the subject a little. The chutney for the shoot. More or less as you described. Don't like using red onion as the sweetness already in the beetroot. Apart from that follow your head. Can't go wrong really. Jok. -

To be honest I make lots of different chutneys. The all round one is a recipe from River Cottage which is excellent. It involves onion, courgette, green bean, cauliflower, cooking apples and sultanas. White wine vinegar , Demerara sugar, pinch of salt and a little sealed bag with black peppercorns, bay leaf and coriander. 3 hours and bingo. Secret is to leave it jarred up for a minimum of 2 weeks but better still 2 months before having a go. Very nice. Jok. -

Jamie M. Mate, you can't really go wrong with any of the all year round cauliflower. If you can get plants at this time, in my opinion, it's a better bet than sowing. Having said that, I have both cabbage and purple sprouting, sown about 2 weeks ago, coming along nicely. Soon as the butterfly are gone they are going in. As regards wintering onion, go for one of the Japanese variety. They crop well and don't mind the weather. Garlic in November. Just put in anoth of beetroot, Bolthardy, for my final flourish which will hopefully make chutney for the shoot dinner. Jok. -

VFR 400 yes mate. Get your winter cauliflower in now. (Plants). Last chance saloon with beetroot. Any salads you like but radish may goa bit woody. Get the ground ready for setting your garlic and winter onions. Maybe, just maybe, you have one last chance with peas but a bit hit or miss. Have fun. Jok. -
Neil. Strange but true. We were able to visit a supermarket type place where the ingredients were more or less next to each other, sugar. Molasses , yeast. I remember one of our help saying you are not what you are , you are a chemist. The noise from the the rooms , I wil admit, were, about gloop, gloop, gloop. The air locks never stopped. Anyway. W e got. Pissed everyday so all was good. They !I'll admit were strange times. Jok.

On a positive note. Have a look at my carrot roots and you will see no splitting. They were set from seed in the high box, as previously mentioned . The compost was totally leaf mould and cow muck, aged. I have not grown anything else from this box.jok. -

Yes mate. I'm chuffed to bits with how things are going. Some of the the young guns on here will be learning a thing to two which is good news.,Tiercel is listening in and giving support so can't be all bad. Made me chuckle a bit when a newbie mentioned 163 pages of reading lol. How he makes sense of our nonsense begs belief. Anyway. Good all round. Great to se our members are having a good season. Next thing we need is the cooking of the goodies. Chutneys and the like. We will see who prepares the best. Jok. -
We used to make illicit alcohol whilst in the Middle East. Basically consisted of fruit juice drained through a marrow or similar which was housed in a ladies stocking. Then over to the hired help who distilled it. Wonderful but totally blinding in content. Bet there are one or two on here who remember Sadiqui from late 70's early 80's. Fck that was a trip. Jok.

Well you lot. Back from the sun and into the worst rain in a long time. HOWEVER? Results. Hope you like. -
Sussex. I'll have a look when I get back from Hols. Some good honest pics are the order of the day. I'm not looking forward to the number of courgettes I'll be cutting and I know the caulis and broccoli were all coming along nicely. Sunday morning will tell a story. Jok.

Terry. Storage but true. In my white netted enclosure, 24 Brussels and 12 cabbage unaffected, same row all calabrese and the caulifower completely decimated. Outside the covering, all brassicas unaffected. Why?. I'll put up some pics when I get back from hols. Jok.

I think the worst thing about our gardening is our seemingly inability to deal with annual problems with any conviction. I' on about potato and tomato blight, club root (which to my horror I have), pea moth, carrot fly, ants and a hoste of others. Strangely, my neighbour said 'what does a pea moth look like' and I haven't a clue. Just that little grub in the pod. Other things like white and black fly, butterflies, pigeons and rabbits you can see and take care of. Another of my neighbours looked at her cauliflower in shock and asked me what had gone wrong. Club root. She lost the lot. We are re

I took another load of chicken manure down today which helps with rotting the compost. Also cut a bagful of comfrey which puts another layer of good ness in the mix. My biggest job by far, at the moment, is something I didn't really think too much about. De Stoning. For some reason, we are no where near a river or brook course, the garden , at about a foot down, is full of river stones. Now I realise that it's good for drainage etc but whenever I rotovated or hand dig sections up they come and not small by any means. I'm trying to do about 4 square mets at a time but the volume of rubble is a -

Nearly at the end of 2nd earlies with one more row to go. Charlotte. What a great tasting potato. Before we know it, it'll be main crops and thinking about our winter veg. What a shame it goes so quickly. Jok. -

Nice one son. You know it makes sense. Not only that, the young guns on here air having a little peek and thinking that's the way forward . Thing is, we are never too old to learn a thing or two so if anyone has further comments we are all ears. Jok. -

Moral of the above is' do not use plugs with root veg'. It'll end in tears. Jok. -

Knew it. Right, think on this. Particularly carrot and parsnip as a a growing entity. Sow a seed and only one thing can happen. They grow naturally down as stamp root to find water. From sowing, nothing disturbs the root from going only one way, down. Now, when you put a plug in the ground , unless you have prepared a hole deep enough to take the entire rootstock then you have effectively stunted the root growth. Result. ? Exactly what you have shown us. The root no longer needs to seek nourishment further down. As you water, the plant accepts surface feeding and he ho curly carrots. Now then. -

Well son I'm going to ask a question. I'm not being judgemental by the way. They look like the result of using plugs. Same as trying it with beetroot and parsnip. If not then the soil has literally stopped the tap root going down. Too much stone?? Over watering?? You tried plugs didn't you? Jok -
I'm currently hunting for 'The Holy Grail' which I'll admit would be cool to find.. Welcome on board from a fellow Midlander even if I am a Jock. Jok.

Baretta28. Lovely offer fella. Hope it helps the Yorkshire lads. Down here we just cut down trees lol. Jok.

I'll do it now. Didn't realise I'd already done it. If you look past the greenhouse you'll my carrot box and in the front a folded down skillet which stack upon each other. Fill with your own brand of compost mix and away you go. Simples. Jok.
