Lock the dog in the kennel for a fortnight so hes absolutely bouncing then wait till its windy as hell take him too a field of sheep that are going to run but can't go far so you can catch the dog before he can do too much damage . when he chases the sheep get after catch him put him on the lead but have a length of blue 25mm alcathine pipe with you hidden about 3 foot long and hit fuc out of him at the same time shouting his name in an aggressive manner. if you done that the first time you wouldn't be writing on here about it and also its got to be blue alcathine the yellow stuff they use for

One good old hound sometimes will hunt a fox further than a pack especially on bad scent because it would be very steady but that means slower than a pack .with a pack of hounds they will all be racing to get to the front and then somtimes over run and if there is not enough scent they will lose it ive seen a couple of hounds hunt around for a hour or two on a bad scenting day and then when the pack has been brought back to join them it all ends in two minutes because the steadiness has gone but this is usually when hounds are trying to run without putting their nose first normally a young p

I think it takes a type of hound to mark hounds mark also in different ways some just stand looking down a hole some wedge they self up a hole and dont make a sound some just dig not making a sound and the ones I like are the ones that check the hole and just stand back a foot off the hole entrance making as much noise as they possibly can and in my eyes they are the ones that will get a pack of hounds marking it winds the others up so that if it is in them to mark then they will start but there are ways to get them to mark if its in them but firstly you got to make them want to kill a rabbi

A good huntsman will find his terrier man out and will know everyone of the terrier mans terriers very well and the terrier man will know the most reliable marking hounds Good terriers will make good hounds and good hounds will make good terriers if the huntsman and terrier man are singing off the same hymn sheet they should work together and be very honest with their hounds and terriers and be it hounds or terrier found to be guilty on a day it should never be spoken about openly only between themselfs

In wales nearly all packs only employ a huntsman haven't got enough money for anyone else and alot of huntsmen are happy to put their red coat on and trot around the countryside just looking the part even before the ban but I blame the masters cause they are in charge it seem they are masters cause they got plenty of money but just haven't got a clue but there are some good huntsmen and masters in wales but verry little and I think it will get worse

Walk it on the beach and try to keep it in the sea water once a day and keep the dog in verry small kennel till cut heels and if you live long way from seafront have a holiday

Ive seen quite a few professionals huntsmen been in a job too long and just go through the motions in a days hunting wasting time in cover when it is clearly nothing there and what I see in it there are good and bad in amateur and professional just cause ur paid to do something doesn't mean ur better than someone who isn't paid and amature huntsman can also learn the trade coming up from a young age and if you love something and brought up to it the right way what is the difference ive seen good terrier men who dont get paid which then be called amature but ive also seen many bad.

Could be the opposite alimac2 amature huntsman are in it sometimes for the love of it when professional huntsmen sometimes it just their job and just go through the motions

Philluk that was a good post which made alot of sense especially when you say about huntsmen today finding foxes losing it and going to find another I believe it has ruined many hounds hunting in that way it causes hounds not to persist in trying to find the line when it has lost it, lifting its head too easily waiting for the huntsman to pick them up and taken them to the next draw when really the huntsman should come there and quietly cast his hounds where the line might be which will then teach the hounds to do it their selfs better especially if they find the line on a cast given them the

The show should be held at builth wells show field common sense its in the hart of wales which will attract more people and it comes with many gate exits if the organisers of this show ain't carefull the show will obviously end in prob 5 years max

I once read if you feed hounds dogs chicken they wont kill chickens but if you feed them chicken eggs they will kill chickens and there once was a pack of hounds fed on calfs and in that season them hounds killed 21 calfs so then they asked the huntsman to skin sheep for the hounds and he said no because they too smelly and they have a lot more money for calf skins lmho dont believe all you read and there was a miss print in the book neil cwmy as I know him jp as you have read about him said they hunted better on flesh and it was printed wrong in the book

I don't know about a vixen below ground when she got cubs cause never dug a vixen and cubs but ive seen a vixen try and take a dog away from her cubs when shes above ground by showing her self and getting dogs to hunt her same as a dog fox will take you away from a vixen when being hunted and I have never seen it but they say if you are digging cubs the vixen will sometimes be not far away calling her cubs and try to get you to follow her away from the den also acting injured at the same time I don't want piles of shit fired at me for saying some of this cause only some I know is true have any

Would there have been much fat in the meal jp fed all those years ago or would there have been more fat in the dead sheep he fed which died on his farm and other farms in is area

Neil ur a busy man hunting over three days a week and you seem a decent man who knows the job of hounds which I respect ur point but every one like you say is entitled to their own opinion I find I am a stubborn person who will find things out for my self and never believe what others say because they have been hunting a long time because some people have hunted all they life and still haven't got a clue but also there some who have and know a lot of true facts what you said neil about blaming scent I can only talk about packs ive seen some packs give up a check to easy and some will overrun

Some times scent is used far too much as a excuse why the hounds havent hunted very well ive seen hounds speak on a cold line when the majority of the pack can not is this becase they have been fed on meal and the other hounds fed flesh or is it because they are deeper scented hounds bred a different way and if you put all the deeper scented hounds that could hunt a cold line in 1 kennel and fed them flesh and fed the rest of the pack meal in another kennel would you then see the ones fed meal hunt the best I can tell you they wouldn't cause plain and simple it is in the breeding of the hou
