  1. I remember being told that in 70's that the RSPB surveyed some nesting merlins and for some reason painted the eggs, presumably to mark them, but I don't know why. This paint apparently killed the unborn chicks. However I have never been able to verify this. Much more lately they will happily tell my neighbours that they cannot touch nesting jackdaws in their chimneys, which we all know is rubbish because this clearly covered on the open licences under threat to health.
  2. Cheers. Are scopes available with a long depth of field so that targets are in good focus between say 10 - 40 yards?
  3. Hi - yes it was being restricted at the front although there looked to be a small gap. Here it is. It doesn't look like I can adjust the objective though. Can anyone recommend me a decent starter scope for up to £60 for 10 - 40 yard vermin work on this BSA Lightening please?

I am very sorry to hear what happened and I really hope you show this organisation up for what it is and obtain some kind of recompense. However I guess this will still be little compensation for the loss of the your dog (or dogs).
  5. Great stuff mate- shore caught? Tactics - or is all secret?
  6. It's a lovely gun! Have fun and don't scratch it!
  7. Not anymore! If you don't know an adult who has one and will help you, I suggest you get your Dad or Mum to get a certificate as well as yourself. At £50 for five years it makes sense. As an important aside, I know you said you've used guns before, but who is going to teach you how to shoot properly and humanely and most importantly about gun safety?
  8. In my case I had little choice for my mum. She'd been in hospital and she had her leg broken by another patient and she asked to go into care herself. Later she became more ill (a very long story) and in fact she was given 24 hours to live by the GP one day in September 2012! That's a hell of a long 24 hours as she is still going strong. My wife or me visit her about 4 - 5 times a week and she seems content. As said above it is an excellent care home, even with the low pay to staff.
  9. I am sure you are right. You said you have a match background so you know about fish. However I am always one to go against the grain and so maybe you should search swims that others don't rate. A few years back I went to a stretch where there were said not to be many barbel and I had 17 (and 3 chub) out of one swim all on lobworms! Admittedly nothing over 6lbs, but I was very happy and I also didn't tell any other anglers for 3 years. Good luck with this!!
  10. I wouldn't take a 682 rough or vermin shooting, but then again that Browning is a heavy gun too. I do feel you are getting into the realms of clay only guns now and you did say your main use will be vermin. If this is still the case I do think you need reconsider based on what your main use will be. I have shot some lovely lightweight field guns, maybe you should be looking for something lighter.
  11. Sorry to hear that. Maybe you should drive further afield to a river with more fish in it!
  12. Is anyone else catching on nearby swims?

They should just fold up and disappear, but I am sure evreyone here is already on the same page. There is of course a need to mainatin animal welfare standards, but not from them ffs, nor the other bunch of clowns for birds.
  14. I hope you pick one up soon. If you got two rods, have you considered trying a rolling bait on one? I don't think it will reduce your odds. Whatever happens, hoping to see a nice barbel on this thread tonight.
  15. My mum is bedrridden in care home, but it is very good and the staff all seem to really care. I don't how they do it though because they pay the staff half of bugger all. There is also a high staff turnover and not a lot of people will do the job. That's why the wrong people are get employed in some homes.

Hi folks - I can't quite work put what has exactly happened here as the first post seems to be a second or third post, so i am guessing the original first few posts have been removed for legal reasons maybe. However I always advise everyone who tells me about an animal or bird problem to keep well clear of the Rs P Ca and the RS p B and never ever give them any money. Years ago we were reported to them claiming our dogs had no shelter and they soon came round. They left again soon too.
  17. My first gun was an AYA yeoman default choked at 3/4 and full. It smoked clays and seriously messed up any close quarry. I now use 1/4 for everything bar trap.
  18. Let's see what Ossie says. :-) You don't really need a bolt rig for barbel - in fact you could lose your rod like that. I find they often hook themselves even if I only using a single swan shot. Agree with specimen set up comment though .
  19. OK. I'll have a go tomorrow now, though.
  20. Thanks. I'd love to take the flip up off, but it is on so tight I feel I might break the scope if I force it any more than I have already tried. Any recommendations on how to remove easily are very welcome please. Or is it just a matter of prising it off?
  21. Sounds good and it sounds like you need to find the fish on that river first. However is the current that strong that you need a 2 oz lead?
  22. Today I dusted off an air rifle which I bought in 2006, but have never used. I got it when I was buying a Beretta semi auto shotgun that will accept an ISIS recoil pad, but then I had to have an unexpected angioplasty. After that I decided to take up horse riding after a 30 year gap because it gives me more exercise and my daughter is also into it. Anyway soon I hope to have more time on my hands so I want to get back into rifle shooting, starting with a sub 12 air rifle and then I’ll see if I want to move on again. I couldn’t even remember what I’d bought, other than it was short and had
  23. Tight lines. What method and baits are you going to use? The earlier photo looks like pellets. To be honest barbel are not a shy fish and if you can locate them, they should take most baits presented properly. If it was me I'd use lobworms or meat using as light a rig as the current will allow over some groundbait with a bit of hemp mixed in. I know it's not very modern, but it usually works for me
