  1. I shouldn't give a 9 week old puppy a bone personally, it will have no proper equipment to deal with it yet and anything it can get in its mouth unattended carries some fair degree of risk. I am sure you missed the fact of age and the fact that it will only recently been parted from it mum
  2. talk about ideas ABOVE yourself, sad though
  3. I have only had one that reached a good age (13) she pretty much gave up herself, no longer did she want to look over every wall for something to chase and she was wise enough to know that her old legs were not up to catching a fit rabbit on fair terms (any dog with brains soon learns what it cannot get) but she did still poke her head into a bush now and then for a mixi or the like (sometimes in embarrassing places) . I can think of nothing worse than carrying a carcass of a once loyal dog off a field because I asked for too much too long.
  4. He is correct on two points. 1. the bullet will be traveling slower and will have as a result lost a lot of its frangibility on impact hence ballistically a ricochet can be seen as more likely (especially with tougher heavier constucted deer bullets) 2. its harder to define the nature of the ground at 400 yards than at say 100 (hidden boulders etc within the grass are harder to see) Still there is only one safe shot and that's the one were you are sure were the bullet will end up, though show me the guy who has never had an unexpected ricochet and I will show you a guy of limited experie
  5. Don't care to be honest, there is no such thing as a dog that steadfastly wont go for a bunny at some stage in it development (unless the owner breaks it of the tendancy). Give me any dog from one of those little bald lap dogs to a great dane and I will get it to try. Look at a working gundog like a spaniel. The trainer / owner breaks it of the tendancy to chase unshot game and sit to flush etc. Give the same dog a lightly shot bird or rabbit to chase and it will be after it as keen as any lurcher (if somewhat slower). If you have a dog that wont yet then I suggest you just have one
  6. Rabbits are patchy this way (slightly west of settle) and the lowest in numbers I have seen, skipton is the same and stuggling with mixi by all accounts, looks like you have found a pocket of resistance there
  7. Firstly its very young (9wks) how long has it been away from mum a week? Even with a kennel dog I should be giving it plenty time during daylight hours playing with the kids to help it socialise, carrying it about in the gamebag in the village round my chest for the same reasons. However every time it went to the kennel it would be for a good experience, as it should be being fed lots of small meals at this age the answer is right before you as to what that might be. That said I should also be bringing it indoors for periods to start house training (having kept kennel only dogs I assure you i
  8. Ok, it picks stuff up half way there. If recall was 100% one suspects it will come to you, though this time carrying the ball, all you have to do then is sort out a decent delivery and release of said ball. Just do it in play and for now don't fuss over taking the ball off it just get it used to coming back and getting a big old fuss from you Retrieving is just recall with something in the dogs mouth.
  9. Deffo not max 4 on moonflights it can light up almost. Something greener early season something browner later season or just don't wash the green one and it will adapt itself naturally
  10. It can be many things not least the shooter having a bad day. Check your gun is cleaned correctly, mounts and action screws tight etc. Wind becomes much more apparent the further out you get as does shot to shot speed variations. Sometimes a load don't perform brilliant at 100 yards but actually produces stunning long range accuracy, the reverse can also be true (in fact more often it is most frequent). The reasons for this last point are often said to be stabilisation and with 40 grns out of your CZ (these have different twist rates in the range) could well be the reason or at least some of i
  11. Crimping can help concentricity of the bullet in relation to the case, there are other ways of achieving this that are mostly better. You wont see many / any Benchrest shooters using such gear these days though certain rounds (especially those that headspace on the rim like hornet ) it will help. Set your die in exact accordance with the manufacturers instruction to crimp
  12. The .177 has a trajectory advantage of 5 yds over the .22 (this is an advantage in competitive field target shooting in ranging a shot) it makes no real matter in the field at appropriate hunting ranges. I have hunted with .177, .20 and .22 air rifles for over thirty years and I only have .22 in my cabinet today, on rats and ferals (the main use I have for 12ft lb airguns) I believe it to be significantly superior preventing over penetration and creating less runners than .177. that said with perfect placement every time there is no real difference, in the real world (especially taking quick
  13. 3 points? try finding people with a clean licence these days. I bet over 1/2 the police in his area have 3 points. Indeed I know of coppers who have had full on driving bans (though they got disciplined its not always a sacking offence) You can loose your FAC ticket before you loose your driving licence though through driving offences, it just depends on for what and were. If he reacted badly to the mention of those points that is another matter.
  14. With a tight budget (you don't state what it is and cheap to one guy is dear to another) I should look at the highest quality scopes that you can afford second hand. 3-9 x 40 will allow you to see bullet strikes at 200yards if you shoot into the correct things. Try making your own shoot and see targets, there are lots shown on u-tube. remember for normal use on fox etc. you don't need a great amount of magnification 9x is equivalent to the actual distance / 9 . Yes even 4x mag at 200 yards is equivalent to using open sights at 50 yards. 8x mag is only opens at 25 yards. So don't suffer the r
  15. Just registered today, from today what is a bright and dry day here in the Hills of Bowland in Lancashire Life long love of all things outdoors Shooting, fishing, dogs etc. Special interest in rifles, wildfowling and gundogs at present, though there isn't much I haven't been up to over the years. Sat at home at present bored rigid with a bad shoulder and thought I should have a check in. All the best Kent
