  1. Welcome Daz. I'll be heading over to the farm with a selection of 12 bore, .22lr and .243 to tidy the place up a little bit. 6am on a sunny Saturday morning, best part of the week by a country mile. Happy hunting.
  2. I use a edgar brothers bipod on my hmr and its better than the harris I have on my .22lr. And they are roughly £60 Nice one Dan, I'll take a look at this one.
  3. I had the same range finding issue as you so bit the bullet and bought a Hawke LRF400 - plenty good enough for all my types of shooting. Sod's law I haven't seen anything shootable in the couple of times I've been out with it - always the wrong type of gun with me. Next stop is a home made carrier for my air, .22lr, .243 and 12 bore haha. That'll change my luck. Thoroughly recommend a rangefinder though - small investment if you're a regular shooter and helps ensure a humane kill.
  4. Excellent improvisation. I'm forever kicking myself that I've forgotten something when I get down to the farm so I started carrying it all in the back of my car all the time (guns and ammo aside). If you're feeling creative then I can recommend a set of 'Monkey Sticks' that will cost about £14 and 30 minutes of your time. Solid platform but less handy for rapid positioning than a set of bipod sticks. Worth a look on the Stalking Directory to see if they're something you could benefit from. I have both types - the monkey sticks for stalking and a variable height bipod style shooting sti
  5. Nicely done! Your grouping is better than your drawing skills How did the moss hold up as a makeshift bipod? I've been known to use a hoodie all rolled up and tucked into the hood to make a softish lump to rest on. Still can't bring myself to spend £90 on a Harris bipod and I'm unsure that any others would hold up well enough. Time to crack out the PPUs and see if they float your boat as much!
  6. I think as long as you get your scope sorted then that's the main thing. Like I said, as soon as my scope was done I've picked up a couple of boxes of the 90gr to try out. Hope they do work well with my rifle as it will save me a packet in the long run - not planning on home loading anytime soon. Please shout back with how you get on. What sort of rifle do you have? I recently posted a separate topic on my new rifle. I bought the Browning A bolt in .243. Will post photo of my targets with grouping shots results at the weekend and let you know how I got on with the Winchester 80g. I

  8. If you're setting the sights for the first time you might want to try something more 'reliable'. This brand seems to present some accuracy issues for a range of guns and whilst you'll get on paper it might not group as you'd expect which then leaves you wondering about the effectiveness of the scope (I've been there recently). If you've got some regular ammo with the right weight for your barrel twist then I'd stick with that for a new scope zero. At leas then you'll know that's ok before switching across to the cheaper less reliable stuff. Too many new variables in the equation can hav
  9. I think there's a thread on Pigeon Watch where people post their current application / renewal experiences with timescales. Worth checking out.
  10. Some forces will issue a closed ticket first and then only open it up at renewal. Some forces will open it up on request a little earlier depending on circumstances. Not many that I'm aware of will offer one on a first application. What calibres are you applying for and do you need an open ticket or just want one? What sort of hunting are you going to be doing? it's all relevant and will help people guide you a bit more with their answers
  11. The helping piece could be a point of difference for you. Any help around the farm (with non shooting activities) can often find you bumped towards the top of a list where shooting is concerned. A good deed for a good deed so to speak. Keep at it and offer a helping hand with any other jobs around the farm. After all, it's not as if you're missing out on shooting time if you do end up helping out haha. Good luck and keep at it
  12. Because you're a chap with good character, a stable home situation and you're keen to ensure everything is done by the book as you take up a new sport. If he probes further then as Pete123 said, ask him if there's anything in your file that would give rise to any notion that you can't be trusted. (I'm assuming all of the above are true but feel free to chop and change as you see fit). Good luck mate, I think he's just being extra tough as it's for them to prove you're not of good character to hold an SGC, not for you to prove your worth.
  13. Would be worth taking your mobile number down off the public part of the forum. You never know who's looking and where it'll end up / be used for Usually best to PM information like that where possible.
  14. If you have a good reason for a .243 then there's no reason why they shouldn't grant one straight off. I got 2 centre fire rifles on my first ticket with no arguments about suitability. Just good, proper service from an FEO and the issuing team.
  15. And it's also the reason why you can hear the rounds crack over your head if you're down in the butts at a longer distance target range.

  17. CZ/Brno will alway feature highly for the .22lr I've got a Ruger 10/22 and they're great semi autos and customisable probably more than any other rifle on the planet. Also have a Howa in .243 with a synthetic stock - performs very well and perfectly at home on the farm with no worries about damaging the stock on fences etc. Can pick both guns up very cheaply on the second hand market and similarly both won't break the bank if you buy new.
  18. Haha, I thought exactly the same about mine. They won't win any beauty parades but they're sturdy and they've survived a few trips out into the field.
  19. Without wishing to wind you up any further, why were you using a set up to hunt that you hadn't zeroed properly first?
  20. Had them delivered this morning and are great quality, just as described and very well packaged. People who passed this up missed out on a bargain as far as I'm concerned. Very happy and will be a bit warmer this weekend. Cheers again.
  21. Homemade quad sticks - about £14 all in and solid as a rock. Well pleased - just followed the instructions on the Monkey Sticks thread on the Stalking Directory. Can't go wrong with them as even if you don't like them it's only £14 wasted, not £120 as I've seen them up for in the shops (albeit with nice wood etc).
  22. +1 Don't forget to tell them to sod off if they ask you where your cabinet keys are kept.
  23. Just google the ammo you're thinking of and you'll find the answer pretty easily.
