I use a old fishing rod, good stuff, can get the dog really blowing, I've been making the toy smaller over time , now down to a mouse

My pup done this a few months ago , was catching then didn't pick anything up for a month. Ran him with another dog soon sorted it, not saying it's wrong or right, but worked for me
