  1. funny thing ferret breeding last year i only managed to rear 3 most of my mates were the same with some not having any this year i have two litters ( 9 and all doing fine this is not the first time i,ve noticed this trend ,all or nothing seems to be the rule
  2. question for Skycat what do you think the pros and cons would be in putting cricket over a border bitch to breed reverse 3/4 border 1/4 whippets and what was the original thinking when his breeder put a whippet to his border ?
  3. years ago my whirrier ( jack x whippet ) got to to my russell bitch the resulting litter were cracking bushing dogs catching loads in cover the 1/4 whippet gave them a slight edge in the speed department and made them a little less head strong than a pure terrier so maybe a reverse border cross could be just the ticket
  4. a well bred working whippet would suit you a lot better on small fields and would leave the crosses you mention for dead
  5. i have a 13 month old cocker bitch ( the first spaniel i,ve owned ) when she was younger i was taking her out with a mates springer which smashed every bush it came to my bitch just walked by my side but if there was any thing about shes strait in the cover i think this is the cocker way of working
  6. daywalker the pups i bred made 12 inches the mum was a small bitch jr only 12" to shoulder and the dad the whirrier was 16" the pups looked like leggie russells with a slightly snipey head a mate of mine had one for a friend who wanted it to bolt rabbits to the gun a year or so later i asked my mate how the pup was going he said his mate had sold his gun as he could not get a shot in !! every rabbit that bolted had the pup inches from its arse
  7. had a jack x whippet years ago he did catch on open fields but his main strength was snatching rabbits as they left cover if they got past him he,d press them hard they would have to go to ground i crossed this dog back to a jack these 1/4 whippet 3/4 russells were mustard in thick cover and in hedge bottoms catching plenty they all so showed no interest in going to ground
  8. its not that simple if it was we would all be breeding the best field trial champs ,derby winning horses, greyhound derby winning muts genetics does not work like that if only it was that simple
  9. a pup will cry for a short while then settle down and feed its all over very quickly and soon forgotten a spaniel is forever wagging its tail the one i had was always smashing her tail against walls doors etc and when working would cut her tail to ribbons much better to have them docked first as last
  10. simplest solution add price of docking to the sale price of pups when i was docking terriers they would be done on day 3 half the litter would be done and returned to bitch hour later the other half this gave the bitch more time to clean up pups and caused less stress to the dam
  11. any one hunting with a 3/4 cocker 1/4 beagle i have a cocker bitch that hunts well but once she rises a rabbit shes on looking for the next i wonder i a beagle cross would add a bit of sticking power that said i think a half cross would be to much for my needs
  12. dont do what i did a few years back had a wild polecat cross that was a bit nippy so i dipped my finger in a bottle of hot chlili sauce and poked it in the cage big mistake being bitten is one thing but having chilli sauce run into the cut is a different ball game!
  13. mate of mine swears by useing a bar of soap to stop biters open the cage and hold out bar of soap if it bits it gets the soap and thinks twice about doing it again dont now if it works but worth a go
  14. I,ve been thinking down these lines myself for a while greyhounds were easily obtainable and the greyhound boys were glad to pass them on after there racing days were over temperament preydrive, stamina are just a few things that had to be taken on trust . The only salukis available were show bred and of doubtful use but with imported desert bred dogs now in the country this could be a viable alternative to greyhound bred dogs
