back in the day i had a pup from accidental mating between doberman and my mates collie greyhound bitch to look at he resembled a under weight labrador but when he was behind a rabbit it had to go to ground or be caught he had no speed but was relentless he could travel in cover almost as well as out of it down side could be a bit of a bugger with other dogs

its not enough just the parents are good solid workers they have to come from a good line of solid workers all you need is a dodge on the dame side and a quitter on the sires side to come through and thats that a litter of crap .how did the parents brothers and sisters work were they as good or were they nothing to right home about that said some dogs just dont jell -
the only way as i see it to increase you.re catch rate is to increase the number of dogs in you,re pack the more dogs rattling the rabbits around the more chance of a catch there is no one type or cross that will improve you,re catch rate some dogs have the nack some dont the best catch dog ive seen in cover was a corgi x russell he would stand mortionless in a rabbit run and let the other dogs bring the rabbits to him

no show rings for me jamie. Wideboy there are loads of extra holes in my collars they still slip off my jills seam to have small heads and thick necks ive started working them with out collars (which i dont like doing ) then putting a collared hob in if one of the jills does not show thanks for you,re input anway
-
for a beginner i would start with a 3 ft net 14 meshes wide knitted on a 2 1/8 inch net board this will give you a 4 1/4 inch diamond which allows the rabbits head to pass through the mesh and make dispatching the rabbit in the net easies this is size handy for hedge bottoms
-
kind of thought that might be the case but they still pull down a net with a collar on and i thought it would be better than digging to empty collars
-
Reading a article in the CMW on ferreting by THE HOBBLER this week he say,s he uses a harness with his mk 3 instead of a collar so i thought that sounds like a good idea some of my jills wont keep a collar on for love or money mostly i find collars pulled at the nets but on more than once ive had to dig to a empty collar any way to my point does any one else use a harness and wheres the best place to get some
-
all my nets are hang on rings to dry be they hemp or nylon or poli just because a net can take a bit of abuse theres still no reason not to look after them on ferreting days my nets are put in there bag in bundles of 3 with elastic band this keeps them tidy in the bag and helps with the count when picking up . .I,ve finished making my first batch of poli nets and am well pleased with the way it works so i might be jumping ship who knows next season i could be going out with a bag of pretty pink nets or what ever colours in vogue
-
interesting ive been rabbiting 40 plus year and thats a new one for me like they say you learn some thing new every day when setting a net i put the ring down the hole and push it into the ground so really its not much different to the way you,ve explained cheers
-
all ways nice to learn new things Darbo how did the old guys method compare to the way we set nets now was his catch rate better or about the same for the most part if the bottom ring snags on a stick at the front of the hole the rabbit is lost or do,es the net work like a small poke net very interesting ?,
-
I set my nets the same way drop the ring down the hole spread net and peg in as far away as draw cord will allow but when you are in a tight hedge bottom covered in bramble a 4ft net will snag long be fore it purses on the other hand a small net will purse with less chance of snagging i push the ring in to the ground this stops the net flapping up
-
my nets start at 2 foot 6. 12 meshes wide that i use in tight hedge bottoms and over pop holes these are 10 z nylon then i have 3 ft 4 ft 5ft net 17 meshes wide made of 6 z nylon if you were buying golf clubs you would not buy a bag of putters
-
airedale x springer could be interesting or harrier x springer or even a mix of the 3 could fit the bill
-
cheers lads dont look like i can save my mate anything by making his nets for him how do the lads making nets turn a profit at 2 quid a net ?
-
thanks to tiecel and the one for putting me straight on hemp what i need to know now is how many 3ft nets can a 1/2 kilo spool of poly make this is not about making money this is a favour for a friend and i want him to have value for is money for me its about reviveing a skill i have not used for 10 plus years if he shells out say £50 quid for materials and only gets 20 nets then hes wasted his money and iv.e wasted my time
-
cheers lads thought the answer would be no what is spun poly like to knit with and how many 3ft nets do you get from a kilo roll
-
Hi lads quick question a mate of mine asked me to make him some new hemp nets as i have not made a net for a number of years i was wondering is it worth the trouble too make your own what i need to know is the price of hemp draw cord and rings and how many 3 ft nets will a spool make and how much will each net cost to make i have loads of time on my hands so man hours does not come in to it just is it worth the bother cheers

beddy grey crossed to a beddy grey can give you greyhound types bedlington types and beddy greyhound types of all heights and would be classed as a second cross
-
same here in the welsh valleys lads back in the day we would work any mongrel terrier heinz 57 or spaniel cross with a old flapping greyhound to do the running we would be out at first light and not get in till dark most days we would not catch much but the craic was good happy days
-
back in the day a mate of mine had a corgi x russell that was mustard at catching in cover he would work down a hedge stop point and dive 9 times out of ten he,d come out with a rabbit if i could have just one dog that would have been the one
-
nice post lads with some good points keep it up my thoughts on the subject is i,d go for the tailor made busher every time theres nothing worse than having a terrier jumping up trying to get a piece of the lurchers catch does nothing for the lurchers retrieving and will end in tears more often than not i bushed with terriers for years and was happy with them i know use a pair of cockers and boy do they show up the short fall in the terriers
-
ive just bought a undocked cocker dog 16 months old and i noticed the top two inches of his tail are white and scaly i would be grateful for any advice on what it could be cheers lads
