  1. so if you are a pest controller for a living, and part of your work involves ratting with terriers, surely your tyke is a working dog, by definition. Love a bit of controversy! Sorry gents, some of you seem a bit too extreme for me
  2. Surely an earth dog is an earth dog, and a ratter is a ratter (or both). And what type of dog are they, WORKING TERRIERS. Its merely that the work has changed. You cant change the definition of the word work in the dictionary
  3. But what about a terrier that is very capable of doing earth work, but doesnt because the owner uses it for ratting/bushing/rabbits, does that make it a non working/2nd rate dog?
  4. Surely then, a working terrier is a terrier that does the work you ask of it? Plain and simple. Its just this "work" takes different forms. I dont have a fraction of experience that a lot of you lads have, il admit, but this idea that if a dog dont go to ground, its a 2nd rate citizen, doesnt sit well with me.
  5. I cant see why a dog that gives its all in the job you have given it, makes it less of a terrier because its above ground? Ive seen some mean looking poodles, with a great nose! (very black and shiny)
  6. So because terrier means earth dog, you cant call a bulldog a bulldog if it doesnt bait bulls? Or cant own a Patterdale unless it comes from that area of Cumbria? How many times does it have to be dug to before its called Working? So many questions!
  7. Wondered if anyone would be willing to take me and my little patt out, and give us some digging exerience, in exchange for tracking charlie down and digging my permissions? Kent/Sussex area. pm if interested
  8. Thanks again lads. Got the permission, just need the other bits now
  9. When i said gents, i obviously wasnt talking to you, and no need to worry, i wear false nails
  10. Wondered what bits and pieces i will need to take when i start digging. Dog, spade, collar and locator, gun and flask of course. Are there any other essentials you think i should have handy? Thanks gents
  11. Good luck mate, im green with envy. My day will come!
  12. Basic question gents, apart from size, what are the differences between the entrance to a badger set, and a fox earth? I had heard that somtimes young badgers lie up in a fox earth when they get kicked out by their parents. Dont want to end up disturbing brock, so your experience would be appreciated lads
  13. Do any of you lads use the deben collars and locators? They look quite straightforward and reasonably priced
  14. Not great im afraid. Someone very kindly came with a couple of terriers, but the scaley tailed gentlemen had moved on at the barn. THey had 1 strong mark, but sods law it was under the shipping container, and there was no moving that! Have not visited the farm yet, so maybe better luck next time
  15. Evenin all, just wondered which ones people would recommend. Never dug before, and hoping to start soon, so need to get them. Should i buy a spare collar too? They all seem ruddy expensive, but i know they are essential. Cheers
  16. IT seems freedom of speech only works one way in multicultural britain. Government and the bbc seem to be bending over backward to be "politically correct! Im not allowed to call myself an Englishman anymore, and feel sad that because im born here, work hard, pay my taxes, live in the country and am married, im last in the queue!
  17. I have a patt bitch, who is really soppy with the family, hardly ever barks, but she goes beserk when someone opens the gate, and woe betide the postman putting 1 foot into her territory! Not all terriers are the same i know, but im sold mate!
  18. Not looking for a confession, just that if its a common occurence with digging
  19. Fair point gents, i think i have answered my own stupid question, and no, its never too early to be on the sauce
  20. Looking at the number of terriermen on here, and the fact that most farmland is already sewn up, it has got me wondering again. Its not easy to get find somwhere to get started, so do you ALL really and honestly only dig on your permission, or does a bit of "guesting" go on? And is this accepted as just part of digging? cheers
