    This quote from the third of these links suggests that the heavy coats of todays show dogs IS to do with show breeding. They'd hardly have been selecting hairy coats to improve working ability, since very very few were ever getting worked in the west.     Here's some in their country of origin, still doing what they were bred for having escaped the years of "improvement" undergone by western show dogs.

    When Snowy pulled up in the Forley I was stood not three feet from where Craig lead her off the Fen. She had staved herself crossing a dyke and one of her front legs had swollen double the size of the other with fluid and was rigid, so there was no shame in her effort.     If you read back through the thread dean you'll see that there was no "need" to outcross. I did it because I owned both parents and they both did their job. There was no intent on "improving" either breed, just a wish to get more dogs that would also be good workers. I didn't even keep one for myself. The four pups were given free to friends who all worked their dogs. And the crosses certainly have more staying power than the pure wheaten.

    I wonder is this the dog you mean? This was Ricky's Ch Psycho and when he was bought by a Northern syndicate they changed his name to Hagler. There was neither wheaten nor pit in him though.

    It sounds good in theory Stanleigh but most of the old timers are gone and the info along with them. It was a bygone era and the men involved sought no publicity so I wont either. Can you just imagine the upsurge of breedings that would be made using untested stock and all claiming lineage lifted straight from the pages of such a book? We've all heard the sales pitch of this or that modern day dog that was "never lifted at a trial", but many don't realise that's because many of these dogs were never run in trials.     This was the sire aged about 9 in the photo......Red,....... a son of Pinkies old Rommel dog. Just a regular staff bred from k.c. stuff in the 70's. Don't have a pic of his dam Dusty.

    Well as far as coursing dogs are concerned pre-ban....the only man to win the Forley cup twice, the only man to breed a Forley cup winner out of a Forley cup winner, and the only man to win both single handed British championships and doubled up British championships on consecutive weeekends was Alan S, and fair play to him for doing so while working as a bricky all week.     That's a pic I scanned in and posted on the web years ago. It has done the rounds since then. Ricky and I corresponded a lot for years in between events and I will have sent him a copy of that shot way back when. The book consists of a load of pix myself and many others sent him over the years. Fair play to him for keeping it all together for those interested in history.
