tried Eukanuba, but as Simoman said found it gave the shits if fed too much. Moved on to Markus Muele in January, and my lurchers have never been in better nick. Even the thin coats have thickend up and performance in the field has been as good if not better than when on Eukanuba. Its cheaper too. HAd to take the collie of it as he ballooned though, but suits my running dogs to a tee

summer lampers what are they thinking
trenchfoot replied to lurchers ireland's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Bumped into a lad yesterday who brought a dog down from Appleby. He was bigging it up about his "gypsy bred" dog. Had three out of three hares last week. I told him to take their nappies off before he feeds 'em to the dogs. And people wonder why I prefer to hunt alone! -
I do fencing, some gardening and pest control for a bloke who won the jackpot on the Euromillions. Nice bloke, not changed him. still always tries to beat you down on price

Catching Mink - any tips

Another one down! Dog's come in this morning. Found two lurchers eating half each in middle of the lawn. No emptied traps, so it must have been buffet mink! -
Catching Mink - any tips

looks like the wife will get her coat sooner rather than later. The one I caught over night had recently being suckling young. I heard a commotion from the chicken run this morning after I had let the birds out and found one of her brood mooching around in the run. Poor wee sod looked a bit confused. I ended up poking it out from under a dusting shelter and giving it a shoe-ing. Every spare trap I have is now in situ around and in the runs. rechecked the electric wire. The place looks like Guantanamo Bay. -
Wherever you've got livestock, you have also got dead-stock.

Catching Mink - any tips

Got one of the buggers. Despite various baits in cage traps they only caught rats so far. This was a bitch (?) mink, caught in a fenn mk4 set for rats in a tunnel in the chicken run. I'll keep going and hopefully have enough to make my vegi wife a home grown mink coat! Cheers, Yorkie -
rabbits out in this weather?
trenchfoot replied to dannyevans1990's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
my pup has chew that many wooden spoons we have shares in woodland, chewed £200+ shoes, made the law look like a teabag with that many holes, pooed and wee'd on the floor that many times its unreal, kept me up all night with whining, thrown up on the sofa about 6 times, ripped up duvets and rugs, ripped up a 24 pack of loo roll in the front room, and many similar things, and still not one of us in the family would consider getting rid of her. so look at yourself before you try and justify why you got rid of your dog. was it a 24 pack of Andrex or smart price loo roll ? Normal bog rol -

fenn traps only half catching
trenchfoot replied to trenchfoot's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
use a stick to tap the trigger plate untill the latch is right on the edge then lift the safety with the stick Did that with one of the lengths of garden cane I use to limit the entrance. Trap broke it and dont have any more canes. Still got nine more fingers to go! -
fenn traps only half catching
trenchfoot replied to trenchfoot's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
some good pointers there lads. I've lifted the trigger plate on a couple so that when set on its lightest its still proud of the jaws. Also as I think that the point made about then jumping the trap may a fact that they are avoiding "stepping down"onto the plate. I'd cross my fingers but they are sore from attempting to set the trap even lighter (chers Paulus! ). That's cack handed yorkshire lads for Ya. Cheers again Yorkie -
I run a few tunnel traps around the farm to keep the rat numbers at bay. The tunnels were getting well used but the rats were running up the side of the tunnel and missing the trigger plate. I then reduced the width of the tunnel in the middle to just wider than the trigger plate. This has done the trick and I am catching rats most days. One thing I have found is that about 3/4 of the rats I have caught in these mk4 traps is that they are trapped around the back end only. sometimes only at the root of the tail. They are not dead in the trap and I end up finishing them off with the airpisto

Catching Mink - any tips
trenchfoot replied to trenchfoot's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
No mink as yet, but have caught a bucket load of rats. I know these are the culprits for the loss of the clutch of moorhens eggs a few weeks back. Have had a busted foot for the last 2 weeks so had the wife pull the traps till I am able to get round them. The mink are still knocking about as I have found fresh tracks on the waters edge. However since the canadian geese have nested and hatched on the pond, the loss of newly hatched young has reduced. Not sure if they are connected, but it would be one brave mink to tackle those buggers. The gander took umbridge with me grass cutting and ne -
Poor buggers confused, he does not know which of the "tree-fellas" to go back to. Try changing your name!

BARBRA WOODHOUSE..SIT..STAY.
trenchfoot replied to ferret features's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I managed to get one of mine never to come back when slipped. Now that's a proper trained dog. -
i like the collie in the back ground. Cheers fella, Came from working stock near Clithero. Supposed to be the wife's dog to deal with the livestock. Not bad at that job to be honest, but follows me around like a magnet. Great guard on the yard and a nose to die for. A bloody good dog at hunting up too and the pack is lacking without him. A few people have wanted him to stud other collies and lurchers, but he has one major failing and thats his oversensitive nature. Had his nuts off because I don't want that passing on, or the temptation for the cash
